3. India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh In 1947 Britain recognized Indian independence. Many Hindu’s resented the fact that Muslims had once ruled India. After 1947, Muslims believed that Britain favoured Hindu’s and feared that India would be Hindu controlled. Due to much religious tension in India, the British created a partition in India. This partition created Pakistan – East and West – separated by India. India became a secular state with a large majority of Hindu’s, while Pakistan is a Islamic State.

The anti-Semitic events of 1890 – 1945 convinced both the religious and non religious that the Jewish people needed a homeland. This could be seen as a form of sympathy At the Paris Peace Conference of 1919, held after WWI, Britain received a mandate to administer Palestine. Both groups of people believe that ‘their’ land is holy land. In particular, they believe that Jerusalem is a sacred place.

Many Israeli’s (Jewish people) believed that entire land is theirs (Zionistic belief from the Old Testament – God gave them the land, so they are entitled to it today). The Arab population that had lived in Palestine fought against the presence of a Jewish state, and the influx of Jewish settlers.

10. Israel Israel continued to gain a presence and approximately 700,000 Palestinians were forced to flee. Eventually these people became citizens of Jordan, Egypt, Lebanon and Syria. This reality pushed for greater tension between Palestinians and Israeli’s.

12. Israeli / Palestinian Conflict - Today Many Palestinians reject Israeli citizenship because they consider Israel and enemy. Peace talks are yet to be successful, as they are always interrupted by violence. In the early 21 st century, deep distrust and violence marked the relations between the two peoples.
