2  Importance of border states  Delaware, Maryland, Kentucky, Missouri  Were SLAVE states  Close ties to North and South  Border states VITAL to Union strategy

3 CONTROL WATERWAYS & BORDER STATES  Missouri=parts of the Mississippi River  Kentucky=Ohio River  Delaware= close to Philadelphia  Maryland= close to Richmond/  Maryland= Washington DC  Restore the Union!

4 NORTH SOUTH  Larger Population- more soldiers, nurses, workers to build supplies  More resources, more factories/ industry, better economy  Better network of roads, canals, and railroads  Strong military tradition, strong military leaders  “Cotton diplomacy”- hoped it would bring foreign help  Only had to defend, do not need to invade

5 NORTHSOUTH  Had to invade South, large area, landscape could be difficult to pass.  Hard to keep supply lines open/ protected  Poor economy, little to no industry  Small population  Foreign help never arrives  Poor system of railroads
