14 Giving Back the Hand-Me-Downs Self-Forgiveness 1. What is a hand-me-down you took on as a result of your ambition. This could be a comment you heard; a rejection; a win or loss; 2. Briefly describe a memory - Who was involved? And what did you take on? 3. What did you decide about yourself based on this hand-me-down? 4. List your beliefs, judgments, shame, blame, conditioning you took on as a result of this hand-me-down? (Partner – Write these down) 5. Now you are going to give back the hand-me-down. Take a moment and close your eyes. Visualize the person or persons that were involved in this hand-me-down. Be aware of your energy as you bring fully forward how you felt; what you believed; who was involved; anything that happened as a result. 6. Cup your hands in front of your Basic Self and place all of the feelings, thoughts, beliefs, behavior into your hands. (pause) Now say out loud to the person/persons involved: “ _________________ I’m giving this back to you. I have been carrying this for you but I don’t need it any more. I set you free and set me free. I forgive myself for believing… or I forgive myself for judging myself for …” Take in a deep breath and on the exhale release your hands. 7. Sit quietly for a moment and notice what you are experiencing. If there is time repeat the exercise. Copyright 2014 Rebecca Skeele
