2 Entering High School We would like to give you an overview of some of the more advanced classes we offer at GCHS in our AICE and Advanced Placement programs.

3 Some Advantages of taking AICE and Advanced Placement Courses  Unique learning experien  Unique learning experience  Preparation for college  Ability to earn college credit  Looked upon favorably by college admission departments  Motivating for students  Students are engaged in higher level discussions, problem solving and gain experience working collaboratively  Learn to write clearly and persuasively  Develop time management skills, discipline and study habits  to earn college credit  Looked upon favorably by college admission departments

5 Example 2 Academic Schedule for a 9 th grade student 1. Pre-AICE English Language (honors weighting) 2. Advanced Placement Human Geography (summer assignment will be posted on the GCHS website by May 1 st, 2015) 3. Geometry/ Geometry Honors/Algebra 2 honors 4. Earth Space Science Honors/Biology Honors 5. Foreign Language

6 What is the difference between Pre- AICE and AICE? AICE: Advanced International Certificate of Education 9 th grade: Students may take Pre-AICE classes. The purpose of Pre-AICE is to prepare students with the knowledge and skills necessary to be successful in future advanced studies courses. (Ex. Pre-AICE Spanish prepares students to take AP/AICE Spanish courses) 10 th, 11 th and 12 th grade: Students can participate in AICE classes even though they may not wish to earn the diploma.

7 Potential 10 th Grade Courses 10 th Grade 1. English 2 Honors 2. AICE European History(Arts and Humanities) 3. Pre-AICE Spanish 2, or Pre-AICE Spanish 3 4. AICE Media Studies ( Arts and Humanities) or AICE Thinking Skills (Interdisciplinary ) or AICE General Paper (Interdisciplinary ) 1. Advanced Placement World History 2. Advanced Placement Biology We recommend you complete 2 AICE Courses during your 10 th grade year in order to complete the AICE diploma requirements.

8 Do colleges and universities accept AICE courses and the AICE Diploma? All Florida Universities award college credit for AICE courses just as they do for AP. Over 450 US universities accept AS and A Level courses including all Ivy League universities.

9 AICE Academy Goal: An AICE Diploma o Advanced International Certificate of Education o Study and exams at Cambridge AS Levels o Subjects from four curricular areas o Mathematics and Science o Languages o Arts and Humanities o Interdisciplinary and Skills Based/CORE: Global Perspectives AS Level

10 What do students have to do to earn an AICE Diploma? o Students must pass the AICE exams to earn points to get the diploma. o Obtain at least 7 credits within 25 months o Obtain at least 1 credit in each of 3 main curriculum groups o Earn 1 credit of AS Global Perspectives o Apply to Cambridge for the AICE Diploma senior year

11 Bright Futures The AICE Diploma can lead to a Florida Academic Bright Futures Scholarship – ACT/SAT test scores and GPA requirements are waived – Students must earn 100 hours of community service

13 Advanced Placement Program The AP program provides college level courses and exams in various subject areas for students in secondary schools. More than 2,900 universities and colleges world wide grant credit, advanced placement, or both to students who have performed satisfactorily on the exams. AP Exams are taken each May and are paid for by the school district.

15 AP FACTS  Individual colleges and universities, not the College Board or AP Program, set admission for college  GCHS received the highest passing rate on Advanced Placement in Collier County Public Schools  60 countries around the world accept AP courses  AP and AICE students are eligible for the Collier County Public Schools Advanced Studies Laureate Diploma
