3 Plot is an organized pattern of events consisting of a conflict, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution Plot

4 Theme is the underlying meaning, or main idea, of a story Examples: o Family is important. o If you work hard, you will be rewarded. o Doing the right thing isn’t always easy. Theme

5 An antonym is a word with the opposite meaning of a given word o Ex: hot  cold Writers will use antonyms as context clues to help you understand the meaning of an unknown word Look for clue words like unlike, not, however, and but Ex: “Being the best man is not hard. You walk down the aisle with the maid of honor. Who, in this case, was a matron of honor because she is married.” o How can you discover the meaning of maid of honor when you have the antonym, matron of honor, explained to you? Antonyms

6 Suffixes are word parts that come at the end of the word o Ex: relationship Draw a line between the base word and the suffix activate friendship festive Spelling: Suffixes –ate, -ive, and -ship

7 A contraction is a shortened form of two words o Ex: do not  don’t An apostrophe is used to show where one or more letters have been left out Negatives are words that mean “no” or “not” such as never and nothing o Do not use two negatives in a sentence. This is called a double negative. Contractions and Negatives

8 Underline the contractions and circle the negatives 1.The apartment buildings should’ve been planned for a different site, but the planners weren’t thinking of the turtles. 2.We’ll begin the day with environmental education, even though we have never done that before. 3.You’d agree that nothing beats a day at lovely Green Pond.
