1 The Truth About Homelessness By Karrie Parrish, Maddy Meyerhoffer, Kiyah Davender, Lori Alley, Fatima Khalifa, and Angel Starnes

2 What Does it Mean to be Homeless? A homeless person is someone who is in an unstable or non-permanent living situation. Using this description as the definitive identity of someone who is homeless, it becomes clear that homelessness affects a broad range of people. This pandemic exists right under our noses; our community is not immune to this. In fact, about 949 people in Guilford County will be homeless tonight.

3 For the 2012/2013 school year, Guilford County Schools reports that 2,277 students experienced homelessness. According to Urban Ministry, North Carolina ranks fifth in the nation for hunger, with Guilford County ranking fourth for metropolitan areas. Most people think of the typical stereotype of a homeless person who is on the streets begging for money. Many homeless people live in their cars, on campgrounds, or try to live in their family’s overcrowded apartment. People become homeless from unemployment, increasing prices for houses, being a single parent, mental health problems, and having domestic violence issues in their lives. Information About Homelessness

4 What People Can Contribute to Help This Issue and its Impact? People can donate can foods to non-profit organizations like Urban Ministry throughout the whole year. Organizations like Urban Ministry take in collections of can food in order to make sure homeless people are not starving. Many homeless people do not have enough money to buy their own food since most of them do not have a job that is giving them an income. This amount of food that Urban Ministry provides to the homeless helps them get by every day. These organizations help homeless people receive healthy food that they probably would not be able to have since it is more expensive.
