2 Motherwell Town Centre – Dementia Friendly Community What do we mean? A dementia friendly community is composed of the whole community - shop assistants, public service workers, religious groups, businesses, police, transport and community leaders - who are committed to work together and help people with dementia to remain a part of their community and not become apart from it. This involves learning about dementia and doing very simple and practical things that can make an enormous difference.

3 Motherwell Town Centre – Dementia Friendly Community 3 Why we got started Great fit with policy, strategy, focus on outcomes, Charter of Rights, rehabilitative practice, recovery, assets based approach, community capacity We asked people “Who and Where are important to you?” Heard about importance of living well and living an ordinary, everyday life North Lanarkshire Dementia Demonstrator Site 5 and 8 Pillars Model Knew there was work going on in UK, Europe and beyond

4 Motherwell Town Centre – Dementia Friendly Community 4 So what did we do? Recognised there was a whole lot of evidence out there already… so let’s learn even more by doing! Invited partners to form a small steering group Got excited about the idea Identified Motherwell Town Centre as our target area

7 Motherwell Town Centre – Dementia Friendly Community 7 Designed campaign materials! Developed campaign materials, flyers, introduction letters, information packs. – Our USP - Be the first!!! Approached Alzheimer Scotland for our “brand” – Brand Matching Alzheimer Scotland’s ambition to have Dementia on the High Street – Credentials & Credibility “Dementia is Everyone's Business” - Customer Care “Everyone knows someone with dementia” – Relationship ‘Tips for Shops and Businesses’ - Quality product Developed our “commitment” format and Lanarkshire Dementia Friendly Community board – Engagement & Publicity (Win/Win)

8 Motherwell Town Centre – Dementia Friendly Community Launch day – 21 Sept 2012 World Alzheimer's Day Signed up 20 shops, businesses and organisations

9 Motherwell Town Centre – Dementia Friendly Community Supporting staff to receive practical advice and information about dementia Distributing “Tips for Shops and Businesses” information to all staff Considering any simple changes that might make the environment more dementia friendly Displaying information about dementia and promotional materials such as Help Line cards, posters and leaflets where practicable Agreeing to work with Alzheimer Scotland and partners once/twice per year to support the promotion of agreed campaigns. Treating customers who may be living with dementia with understanding, dignity and respect. Sample Commitment

Over 800 people have received hints and tips cards 500 people attended Football Memories Open Day @ MFC Awareness sessions with 60 Motherwell Fire Fighters To train the remaining North Lanarkshire Fire Crews To train 20 Police Officers – Community Safety Motherwell Boots will issue Alzheimer Scotland Helpline Cards in prescription bags where appropriate

11 Motherwell Town Centre – Dementia Friendly Community Are we making a difference? One local pub asked about safe drinking for older people – Health Scotland We have been asked to do 4 Environmental Audits Libraries will offer events around the theme of dementia We will train around 12 - 15 in-store champions (MFC, ADSA, Boots and Mobile Hairdresser) Engaged with Network Rail and Scotrail. Initial focus on Motherwell with roll out to Edinburgh Waverley and Glasgow Central Request from local church befriending group New Town Centre Planning – dementia friendly design (Ravenscraig site)

12 Motherwell Town Centre – Dementia Friendly Community Are we making a difference? ASDA staff members had to empty the Dementia Cafe box three times, adding that the project has received the highest ever number of votes for any group during the poll’s one year history.

14 Motherwell Town Centre – Dementia Friendly Community How can we ensure Dementia continues to be Everyone’s Business …. 1 st Anniversary celebration and sharing experience – Sept 2013 Revisiting baseline surveys, measuring success (timing aligned to evaluation of the NL Dementia Demonstrator Site in September 2013) Mystery Shopper - SDWG Extending work in Motherwell Town Centre Roll out to all NL Town Centres as part of the RCOP agenda (community capacity building) Next steps….public transport, faith communities, post office, 4 GP Practices ………
