MEASURING VOLUME

WHAT IS VOLUME? Volume is the amount of space that an object occupies, or takes up. For example, a Mini Cooper only has space for 21 people!

TO MEASURE THE VOLUME OF A REGULAR SOLID: Multiply—Length x Width x Height What is the volume of this rectangular prism?

TO MEASURE THE VOLUME OF A LIQUID: Use a graduated cylinder.

TIPS FOR MEASURING LIQUID WITH A GRADUATED CYLINDER 1.Always measure using the meniscus—bottom of the curved line of the liquid. 2.Always measure from eye level. 3.Be aware of the units ! Graduated cylinders are measured in milliliters (mL). Also, sometimes the subgrades are worth 1 milliliter, sometimes they are worth 5 milliliters.

TO DETERMINE HOW MANY MILLILITERS THE SUBGRADES ARE WORTH: 1.Decide how many milliliters of volume exist between the given numbers. In this case 6 and 8 are given and I know that there is 2 milliliters of space between the two lines. 2.The 2 milliliters of space is divided into 10 sections. 3.2 divided by ten is 0.20 milliliters. 4.Therefore, the amount of space between the 6 and the marking right above it is two tenths of a milliliter. 5.Count up to double check yourself—6.2, 6.4, 6.8, etc.

HOW MUCH LIQUID DOES THIS GRADUATED CYLINDER CONTAIN?

HOW WOULD YOU MEASURE THE VOLUME OF THIS OBJECT??? So glad he’s back! Can you measure L x W x H? Can you pour it into a graduated cylinder?

YOU MUST USE WATER DISPLACEMENT! Subtract the original volume of water from the new volume of water (containing the object) to get the volume of the irregular shaped object.

REVIEW 1.How do you find the volume of a rectangular prism? 2.How do you measure the volume of water? What is the name of the scientific tool that you must use? 3.How do you measure the volume of irregular shaped objects? 4. How do you calculate the value of the subgrades on a graduated cylinder?
