Definition-Volume is the amount of space occupied by an object. Basic SI Unit: Liter (L) Measurement-Volume

Other Common Units: milliliter (mL)- Liquid cubic centimeter (cm 3 )-Solid ___________ cm 3 = ________ mL

Instruments used to measure volume Beaker-(Liquid) (short and fat) Graduated Cylinder-(Liquid) (tall and skinny) Metric Ruler (L x W x H)- (solid)

Beakers and graduated cylinders measure in milliliters (ml) Rulers measure in (cm or mm) therefore L x W x H would be cm3 or mm3

Examples of Measurement: -can of coca-cola= -bottle of apple juice= -textbook=

Meniscus is the curve of the top of the liquid in a graduated cylinder. Always measure the bottom of the meniscus. Measure at eye level!!

It’s very important to make sure you know the value of each line. First check the numbered lines to see how many milliliters are between them. Second check the number of lines between the numbers.

A. _____________

B. _____________

Displacement Add water to the measurement instrument. Take the measurement. Add the item of irregular shape. Take the measurement again. Subtract the original amount of water to get the volume of the irregular object.

Pay attention to….Accuracy!!!!!! Size of instrument. Smaller and skinnier is more accurate. Scale- How much is each line worth?? Use a pipette to add or remove very small amounts. Get level to check measurement
