3. MANNERISMS What not to doWhat to do Put your hands in your pocketPlace your hands at your sides or on the podium. Slouch on the podiumStand up straight but in a comfortable position. Slap your leg, clap your hands, or hit the podium Give your hands something to do by holding your speech. Click your shoes, rock on your heels, or swayPut yourself in a comfortable position and stick to it. Chew gumJust don’t do it. Play with your hair, nose, ear, lips, etc.Again, don’t do it. Use voiced pauses (e.g., um, uh, etc.) Pause and give yourself time to figure out what you need to say. Look at the ceiling or out the window Look at your audience’s foreheads or toward the wall behind them. Fidget Again, give your hands something to do so that you’re not worried about how your shirt is buttoned or if your hair is in place. Anything else?Advice?

4. OVERCOMING ANXIETY Visualize yourself succeeding. Relax! Get your nervous energy out. Practice. Practice. Practice. (In a mirror, perhaps?) Focus on the goal. Don’t apologize. Take deep breaths.
