1 WHAT IS ASTHMA? A chronic lung disease that affects the breathing tubes inside the lungs: There are hundreds of these tiny tubes They carry air in and out of the body They are called “Airways” An asthma attack occurs when Tubes become red and inflamed There is an increased mucous production Muscles spasms tighten around the tubes restricting airflow

3 SYMPTOMS OF ASTHMA Coughing Wheezing or whistling sound Difficult breathing Chest tightness, “pain” Shallow breathing Fast breathing Blue or grey face & lips Skin and muscle retraction between ribs and at base of throat

4 AVOID TRIGGERS Allergens: Animal dander, pollen, molds, dust mites, cockroach droppings, foods & additives Exercise: Excessive exercise (moderate is okay) Irritants : Smoke, pollution, odors, fumes & sprays Emotional Reactions: Sighing, crying & laughing Respiratory Infections: Colds, flu, sinus, etc. Medications: Some medications, especially aspirin Weather: Cold air, excess heat, humidity, dry climate Sleep: Allergens in room, drop in temp, heartburn Emotional Stressors : Family problems, school, etc.

5 ASTHMA TREATMENT Appropriate medications Avoidance of triggers 2 Basic Types of Medications Controllers (Daily) Controls and prevent attacks Reduces inflammation of the airway and mucus production Quick Relief Inhaler (As needed) During an asthma attack to provide fast relief from symptoms Before starting an activity involving known triggers To relaxes muscle tightness around the airways Take as soon as symptoms begin

6 GO Breathing easily - No symptoms - Able to work and play easily ASTHMA UNDER CONTROL No action needed. CAUTION Coughing, wheezing, short of breath, feeling tightness in chest MILD TO MODERATE SYMPTOMS Asthma is getting worse. Student needs Quick Relief Med! Symptoms should resolve in 15 minutes. Call parent STOP Medicine isn’t helping, breathing is difficult, coughing, gasping for air, nose opens wide, chest & neck retract with each breath SEVERE SYMPTOMS Get help now – CALL 911!
