The Real Teacher John 14:25-26 The Need for a Teacher Who Is Being Taught? What Is Being Taught? How Are We Taught?

The Need for a Teacher  Jesus says He had spoken to them.  The teacher has not taught until the student has learned.  The Disciples had learned some but really very little of the great truths of the Gospel!  The Disciples’ focus was on Jesus’ departure, which kept them from understanding what He was telling them. The Real Teacher John 14:25-26

The Need for a Teacher  But Jesus is the greatest teacher ever!  God recognizes the need for the disciples to be taught and provides the best way for that to occur – the indwelling Holy Spirit  So, were they taught? Yes, the proof is in the Scriptures and how quickly things happened after that. The Real Teacher John 14:25-26

Who Is Being Taught?  All of this is directed at the disciples and the need they would have to learn, so the Gospel could go forth.  But this applies to us, too! 1 Cor. 2:9-13 The Real Teacher John 14:25-26

1 Corinthians 2:9-13 (NASB) 9 but just as it is written, “T HINGS WHICH EYE HAS NOT SEEN AND EAR HAS NOT HEARD, A ND which HAVE NOT ENTERED THE HEART OF MAN, A LL THAT G OD HAS PREPARED FOR THOSE WHO LOVE H IM.” “T HINGS WHICH EYE HAS NOT SEEN AND EAR HAS NOT HEARD, A ND which HAVE NOT ENTERED THE HEART OF MAN, A LL THAT G OD HAS PREPARED FOR THOSE WHO LOVE H IM.” 10 For to us God revealed them through the Spirit; for the Spirit searches all things, even the depths of God.

11 For who among men knows the thoughts of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so the thoughts of God no one knows except the Spirit of God. 12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may know the things freely given to us by God, 13 which things we also speak, not in words taught by human wisdom, but in those taught by the Spirit, combining spiritual thoughts with spiritual words.

Who is Being Taught?  All of this is directed at the disciples and the need they would have to learn, so the Gospel could go forth.  But this applies to us, too! 1 Cor. 2:9-13  Man can’t understand spiritual truth himself.  God revealed truth in Scripture.  God revealed truth to the Disciples to be recorded for us through the Holy Spirit!  We understand spiritual truth in these spiritual words. The Real Teacher John 14:25-26

What Is Being Taught?  The Gospel  Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God.  Man is separated from God because of his sin.  Jesus’ death on the cross is the substitution on behalf of our personal sins.  Jesus’ resurrection proves He was that once for all sacrifice for our sins.  This is done through the scriptures and the Holy Spirit. The Real Teacher John 14:25-26

What Is Being Taught?  Remembering the things of God  The wisdom of God is not a new thing.  This reminds us that theology is not changing!  Therefore, what we are taught is not new doctrine.  We tend to forget these doctrines!  We are to remind each other of these doctrines and proclaim them to the world  We are to remind each other of these doctrines and proclaim them to the world. The Real Teacher John 14:25-26

What Is Being Taught?  The object of the teaching is Christ!  John 15:26-27 The Real Teacher John 14:25-26

John 15:26-27 (NASB) 26 “When the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, that is the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify about Me, 27 and you will testify also, because you have been with Me from the beginning.

What Is Being Taught?  The object of the teaching is Christ!  John 15:26-27  John 16:12-14  John 16:12-14. The Real Teacher John 14:25-26

John 16:12-14 (NASB) 12 “I have many more things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13 But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come. 14 He will glorify Me, for He will take of Mine and will disclose it to you.

What Is Being Taught?  The object of the teaching is Christ!  John 15:26-27  John 16:12-14  The Holy Spirit will testify of this.  We are to do the same.  The study of scripture is not the end all.  Instead, scripture is to be used by the Holy Spirit to transform us to the image of Christ. The Real Teacher John 14:25-26

How Are We Taught?  The Holy Spirit is our teacher.  The Holy Spirit also enables us to teach others spiritual truths.  Teaching spiritual truths can never be done in the flesh! The Real Teacher John 14:25-26

How Are We Taught?  Three things are necessary if God’s truth is to be properly communicated. 1. There must be the revelation of the truth to the apostles by the Holy Spirit. 2. There must be the teaching of the Holy Spirit to our hearts, so that, as we read their words, we come face to face with Jesus about whom they wrote. 3. There must be the continuing work of the Holy Spirit to take our testimony concerning the Word and carry it home to the hearts of those who have not yet heard! The Real Teacher

Application Have you received the indwelling of the Holy Spirit? This only happens if you have received Christ as your Savior. Justification Do you begin with Scripture as the basis for your beliefs? Is the Holy Spirit your teacher and not men? Do you testify in your own power to your own glory? The Real Teacher John 14:25-26
