3 Origin of the name The word Wisconsin originates from the name given to the Wisconsin River; Where the name comes from: Based on an Indian word "Ouisconsin" believed to mean "grassy place “.

4 With its location between the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River, Wisconsin is home to a wide variety of geographical features. The state is divided into five distinct regions.

5 The state contains 72 counties. Wisconsin has seven locations in which you can stand in four counties at one time (4 corners), even with the counties' boarders often being river based.

6 Climate Wisconsin's climate is classified as humid continental. The highest temperature ever recorded was 46 °C. The lowest temperature ever recorded was in −48 °C.

7 Melting pot The six largest ancestry groups in Wisconsin are: German (42.6%), Irish (10.9%), Polish (9.3%), Norwegian (8.5%), English (6.5%), and Italian (6.1%).

9 Economy Wisconsin is second to California in overall production of milk and butter, and third in per-capita milk production, behind Idaho and Vermont, and produces about 1/4 of America's butter and cheese Wisconsin is a major producer of paper, packaging, and other consumer goods. Tourism is also a major industry in Wisconsin – the state's third largest, according to the Department of Tourism. This is attributed to the many resorts in northern Wisconsin and the family attractions in the Wisconsin Dells area, which attract nearly 3 million visitors per year.

14 Funny laws At one time, margarine was illegal. While all cheese making requires a license, Limburger cheese making requires a master cheese maker's license. It is illegal to kiss on a train.
