4 Search: for Files Select Search from Start menu – Types Pictures, Music, or Video Documents (Word processing, Spreadsheet) All files and folders Printers, computers, or people

5 Search: for Files File searching – File name example.doc, example.xls, example.html Name +. + Extension – Extension pairs a file to an application Documents – doc Spreadsheets – xls Web page - html – A word or phrase in the file

6 Search: for Files File Organization – Folders contain files – Names are important Search for characteristics – When was it modified? – What size is it?

7 Search: for Internet information Use more than one word – Bonds Baseball player or Financial instruments – Bonds returns 173 million results – Bonds AND baseball returns 12.6 million results – Bonds AND Finance returns 50.1 million results – Bush President or Plant – Bush returns 600 million results – Bush AND Plant returns 34 million results – Bush AND President returns 362 million results Search engines implicitly include ‘AND’

12 A simple web page Prepare a simple web page – Right-click on Desktop – With Menu, Select New  Text Document Open the document and type: – John’s website (replace “John” with your name) – Close the document, save it when asked. – Open the document again. Nothing new. – Select Start  Settings  Control Panel Click Appearance and Themes Category Select Folder Options, then View tab Uncheck Hide extensions for known file types

14 A simple web page, cont’d. Close your browser Right Click the html document again – Select: Open With  Notepad – Type in front of your name – Save the file and close Notepad Click the html document Is your name bold?

15 A simple web page, cont’d. Close your browser Right click html file – Select: Open With  Notepad – Hit Enter key 5 times, then type – Type the title of your favorite movie – Save the file, ctrl + s is one way – Close Notepad and Click html file Where does the italicized title appear?

17 HyperText Markup Language (html) You Markup HTML documents – Your Name – Your Movie Basic anatomy – Markup name in arrow brackets to apply – Arrow brackets with a forward slash to close – apply html between tags Markup means you annotate text

18 HyperText Markup Language (html) A Hyperlink is a part of what we call “HyperText” – See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypertexthttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypertext – URI Uniform Resource Identifier – Close browser & open html file with Notepad – Before type: – After type: – Save the file, close Notepad, and Click file Is your name underlined in blue? – Then click your Hyperlink

19 Oncourse resources Upload your file to OnCourse A110 folder – Login to OnCourse and select Resources – Click Add for A110 folder – Select Browse for file – Click to highlight your file, then select Open – Click Add Do you see your file in the Resources?

20 WebDav Open Internet Explorer – Select: File  Open – Click Open as Web Folder, then Type: – https://oncourse.iu.edu/dav/~user/ https://oncourse.iu.edu/dav/~user/ – Click OK if “username” (above) is your username – Login See your file? – Now you can drag and drop files

21 Remote storage: Mercury Access your Mercury account – Select Start Menu, then: Programs  Utilities  Secure Shell Client – Click Quick Connect – For Host Name: mercury.uits.indiana.edu – For User Name: your user id – Click Connect Press the number for “bash” (if asked), then Enter. (You are picking a “shell” environment in which to operate). – Does the screen go gray and log you off?

22 Remote storage: Mercury, cont’d. Login to Mercury again – Click Quick Connect Host name: mercury.uits.indiana.edu – At the $ prompt, type spinweb, then Enter – Select the folder icon with blue bubbles The icon is located under Window menu Do you see a www folder? – Double click www folder

23 See your changes Open a browser and go to: – http://mypage.iu.edu/~username/home-template.html http://mypage.iu.edu/~username/home-template.html – Do you see your name? Right Click html file on Desktop – Rename home.html With SSH Secure File Transfer – In left window, drag home.html and drop in right window With Browser, go to: – http://mypage.iu.edu/~username/ http://mypage.iu.edu/~username/ – What do you see?
