Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA) is a type of bacteria that is resistant to certain antibiotics. These antibiotics include methicillin and other more common antibiotics such as oxacillin, penicillin and amoxicillin. Staph infections, including MRSA, occur most frequently among persons in hospitals and healthcare facilities (such as nursing homes and dialysis centers) who have weakened immune systems.

What is MRSA The organism Staphylococcus aureus is found on many individuals skin and seems to cause no major problems. However if it gets inside the body, for instance under the skin or into the lungs, it can cause important infections such as boils or pneumonia. Individuals who carry this organism are usually totally healthy, have no problems whatever and are considered simply to be carriers of the organism

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN AN INDIVIDUAL WITH MRSA IS HOSPITALIZED?  MRSA IS SPREAD BY PHYSICAL CONTACT.IN THE HOSPITAL,SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS MUST BE TAKEN TO PREVENT THE SPREAD OF MRSA TO OTHER PATIENTS.PATIENTS WITH MRSA ARE PLACED IN ASINGLE ROOM.ALL HEALTH CARE WORKERS WHO ENTER THE PATIENTS ROOM MUST WEAR AMASK,GOWN AND GLOVES TO PREVENT THE SPREAD OF MRSA TO OTHER PATIENTS.ADDITION,THE PATIENT MOVEMENT FROM THE ROOM IS LIMITED TO ESSENTIAL PURPOSES ONLY.

Is it safe to visit a person with MRSA?  Healthy people are at very little risk of getting infected with MRSA,it is safe to visit when in good health. person who are ill or have weak immune system should not visit. it is important that all visitors wash their hands thoroughly before and after patient contact and before leaving the room.

Symptoms  Staphylococcus aureus is quite common: around 30% of people carry the germ in their nose or on their skin (this is often referred to as being ‘colonised’ with the germ). SA and MRSA are not normally a risk to healthy people and the majority of people colonised with SA do not have any symptoms and aren’t aware they are carrying the germ.  For people who do become infected with MRSA, symptoms can include the following:  boils and abscesses in any part of the body,  impetigo (an infectious skin disease),  septic wounds,  heart-valve infections,  food poisoning and  toxic shock syndrome.

Treatmen Most strains of MRSA can be treated with the antibiotic, vancomycin, which is given to the Most strains of MRSA can be treated with the antibiotic, vancomycin, which is given to the patient in an injection or by infusion into a vein Most strains of MRSA can be treated with the antibiotic, vancomycin, which is given to the patient in an injection or by infusion into a vein Most strains of MRSA can be treated with the antibiotic, vancomycin, which is given to the

Prevention usually passed on by human contact, often from the skin of the hands. Therefore hands should always be thoroughly washed and disposable gloves worn when changing dressings etc. to prevent spreading the germ to other people. in hospital, you can reduce your risk of infection by taking sensible precautions such as:

prevention 1_Keeping your hands and body clean. 2_Always wash your hands after using the toilet or commode (many hospitals now routinely offer a hand-wipe). 3_Always wash your hands or clean them with a hand-wipe immediately before and after eating a meal. 4_Make sure your bed area is regularly cleaned and report any unclean toilet or bathroom facilities to staff.

VISA  When MRSA develop resistant against vancomycin it called VISA.  The treatment of choice for this strain Tigecycline.  Tigecycline is the first one in the glycylcycline class.
