Using the Library Core Skills This question gives information about the classification of material used by the majority of libraries in the UK. Below is a link to the University of Portsmouth's broad subject listing which you can use to find out a precise classmark (also known as shelfmark). http://www.port.ac.uk/library/home/location/classmarklist When visiting any library website/building lookout for this type of guidance which will help you find your way to the most relevant stock. Locate the main areas of stock for your subject including books, DVDs and journals areas of books and DVDs for your subject

Using the Library Core Skills You can apply for a photocopy of a book chapter or journal article here http://www.port.ac.uk/library/help/distance/articleschapters/ If it is available electronically we will normally refer you to where you may obtain it online. If it is required by your unit reading list or as research for your dissertation, we will supply either a photocopy or a copyright cleared scan depending on availability. According to demand, this will be e-mailed to you personally or posted within the relevant unit’s reading list. This service is available to both UK and overseas students but is limited by copyright restrictions (i.e. only one article from any one issue of a journal and no more than one chapter or 5% of any book (whichever is greater). Know how to apply for a photocopy of a book chapter or article

Using the Library Core Skills You can request a hard copy of any book from a reading list not available to you electronically from our Document Delivery Service. You will be sent the first available copy wherever possible for 4 weeks but at times of high demand you may only get a copy for 2 weeks (an extension for you to allow for postal delays). Each book will have a wrapper with reminders about renewals, recall & fines.Document Delivery Service Understand how to apply for a print book within the UK & what alternatives are available inside & outside the UK Unfortunately we can not post books out of the UK for reasons too numerous to mention here. You need to exploit our article/chapter delivery service as much as possible. Hint: Use Google Books previews to identify useful chapters. Do also investigate second hand purchase options on Amazon and Abe Books as these can be surprisingly cheap.

Using the Library Core Skills You can join SCONUL Access at the SCONUL Access site which tells you exactly what to do. 16 Using the Library Core Skills One of the most common copyright questions we get asked is: Q. How much may I photocopy from books and journals? A.For private study or research you may copy, under “fair dealing”: 5% or one chapter, whichever is the greater, of a book 10% of a small book or report of 200 or fewer pages one article from any one issue of a journal Read the Copyright and Licenses section of our web pages to familiarise yourself with some other key issues.Copyright and Licenses You will also find notices near most self service scanners and photocopiers you see in the libraries you use. Identify guidance and comply with copyright law for copying printed materials

The Library Enquiries Service (Tel.(+44 (0)23 9284 3228) deals with all enquiries, including those related to borrowing, queries about your library account, fines, and subject-related questions.borrowing Visit the Contact Us section of the Library web pages for a range of ways to ask us forask us help including e-mail and on-line chat at specific times. As soon as they are ready they are posted out to the requestor’s nominated address in strict order of receipt of requests. Books should arrive within 48 hours of posting. Reservations - This service is not suitable for Distance Learners A reservation will only be registered if every copy of the title reserved is out on loan & unavailable to collect immediately from the library shelf. The first copy of a reserved book returned will be captured by library staff and the reader waiting for it will be notified to collect it. Hint: Items showing as Not-reservable are either electronic and therefore available to you online or have copies on the shelf available for loan. Understand the difference between a reservation & a document delivery request & which you should use

Using the Library Core Skills The copyright limits for printing from our e-resources are exactly the same as those for copying from a printed source: For private study or research you may print, under “fair dealing”: 5% or one chapter, whichever is the greater, of a book 10% of a small book or report of 200 or fewer pages One article from any one issue of a journal Our licences for the use of e-resources are for students to access for private study or research. You are contravening these licences if you redistribute material you have downloaded. When sharing useful sources with your colleagues give references. DO NOT post pdfs or print outs. Read Copyright and Licenses section of our web pages to familiarise yourself with some other key issues. You should also find notices near any publicly available self service scanners or photocopiers you may use.Copyright and Licenses Identify guidance and comply with licensing copyright agreements for printing & using e-materials
