Introductory Sentence Introductory Sentence “ They made their way by the thousands into The Bahamas almost 200 years ago. They were the Loyalists who with their slaves, sought a new life in the islands under the protection of the British following the American War of Independence. The purpose of this essay is to examine fully who the Loyalist were and to discuss fully the effect the American war of Independence had on them. Hey guys remember you have to put this in your own words

Paragraph 1 According to research, the Loyalist also known as the Tories. were North American colonists who remained loyal subjects of the British crown during the American Revolutionary War. Or United Empire Loyalist who sided with the British during the American War of Independence. From the Patriot's perspective, the Loyalists were traitors who would not support the rebel's cause and collaborated with what they thought was an oppressive British government

Paragraph 2 The American Revolution was like a parent/child relationship It was a war between the Kingdom of Great Britain and thirteen British colonies on the North American continent allied with Foreign nations. This war caused America to be divided. One side wanted independence whilst the other side wanted to stay Loyal to Great Britain The side that wanted independence was known as the Rebels. The Rebels had many reasons for wanting to break away. Firstly they were tired of Britain interfering in their Government. Tired of paying high taxes and finally the Colonist was tired of paying for a British army that did not protect them. and tired of Britain interfering in their affairs Remember you have to put this in your own words other wise its called plagiarism

Paragraph 3 The Loyalists opposed the Revolution for a number of reasons. Some believed that the British government had the right to ask the colonies to pay half the cost of their own defence even without having direct representation in the British Parliament. Secondly many of them had close trading ties with Britain in cotton & Tobacco trade., especially those in the southern colonies like Georgia & the Carolinas Thirdly, many Loyalist felt that Britain was to powerful because it had a large navy compared to the rebels army of planters and their slaves. Finally, many of them did not want to give up their title and prestige.

Ok we almost done let us now talk about how the Loyalists was treated during the War

Paragraph 4 The Americans felt betrayed by the Loyalists. As a result, the Loyalists were persecuted. The now victorious Americans called the Loyalists traitors and they were treated as outcasts. The Americans tarred and feathered the Loyalists as a sign that the Loyalists were too afraid to stand up against Britain. Hot tar was thrown on the Loyalists and then feathers were thrown on top of the hot, sticky tar. This was done to make the Loyalists look like 'chickens' or cowards, but in many cases this left serious wounds and scars on them. Some even died Loyalists had their property confiscated (taken away), while others were even killed in riots and attacks. The Americans boycotted (did not shop at) their businesses, and eventually banished the Loyalists (sent them away). Many loyalists moved to England Canada and The Bahamas after the war ended. A lot of them lost their fortunes and land that they had built up over years in the Americas

In 1783 the Treaty of Paris officially ended the War of Independence in favour of the American colonist. American gained its independence. The 13 colonies were now called United States of America. Britain kept control of The Bahamas and Canada. Florida was given to Spain for her part in helping Americans win the war Thus the Loyalist find themselves in a rather difficult situation many of them opted to migrate into British controlled areas such as The Bahamas and Canada. Those Loyalist living in the Southern colonies opted to move to The Bahamas, since The Bahamas was still under British rule and had a favourable climate and good soil that was needed for their plantation lifestyle. Other reasons could have been the proximity to their native homeland which meant that they did not have to travel very far. However these are just a few reasons as to why they migrated to The Bahamas. Other reasons would be further discussed in part two Conclusion
