11 Domestic Tourism Domestic tourism is the ‘backbone’ of the local tourism industry. It is important that you are able to read a table and describe it accurately.

12 “Describing a table” Turn to the table in your books on page 15. The table contains information on Domestic Tourism’s Growth rate. Answer Question Six on the worksheet: Tips: 1.ALWAYS use the figures for the most recent year. 2.Use specific figures (e.g. the NUMBER of day trips in 2008) 3.When describing growth rates you always need to mention the two years you are comparing (and whether the change was positive or negative!)

13 “Describing” a simple table “Describe” means to make a general statement. Use the table on page 23 to make one GENERAL statement about Auckland’s domestic tourism expenditure. For example “The favourite South Island destination for visitors from Auckland is Marlborough”

16 Geographical features of New Zealand Rotorua is of interest to tourists because… 1.It features geysers, hot pools and mud pools – all examples of nature’s glory! 2.The area has many mountain biking and hiking tracks for adventure tourists.

17 Geographical features of New Zealand Milford Sound is of interest to tourists because… 1.The area is HUGELY popular with eco-tourists looking for remote and beautiful locations. 2.The 4-day long Milford track is one of the greatest hiking experiences in the world.

18 Geographical features of New Zealand The Southern Alps is of interest to tourists because… 1.The area is HUGELY popular with ADVENTURE TOURISTS looking for skiing, heliskiing, mountain climbing and snowboarding activities. 2.The Alps include Mt Cook – New Zealand’s tallest mountain and the first major mountain climbed by Sir Edmund Hillary.

19 Geographical features of New Zealand Lake Taupo is of interest to tourists because… 1.History – largest volcanic eruption in the last 5000 years! 2.Adventure – kayaking and trout fishing trips are popular. 3.Cultural – Rare Maori carvings can be seen at Mine Bay.

20 Geographical features of New Zealand The Bay of Islands is of interest to tourists because… 1.Adventure tourists love the water activities (which include dolphin watching, hiring yachts, fishing excursions etc) 2.History – Russell was New Zealand's first capital and Waitangi is here! 3.The “Hole in the Rock” is an exciting adventure activity.

21 Geographical features of New Zealand Abel Tasman National Park is of interest to tourists because… 1.Eco-tourism. The landscape is incredible, the beaches have golden sands and the water is unpolluted and crystal clear. 2.There are a wide range of hiking, diving and snorkelling activities.
