4 What is needed to achieve a Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE) 2016 and beyond

5 To achieve a WACE students must:  Complete an Online Literacy and Numeracy Assessment (OLNA) to demonstrate a minimum standard based on skills regarded as essential for individuals to meet the demands of everyday life and work in a knowledge-based economy  Your child will already have sat the OLNA in March this year. Or, if they achieved Band 8 or above in their Year 9 NAPLAN tests they may not have had to sit the OLNA.

6 To achieve a WACE students must:  Complete a minimum of four Year 12 ATAR courses including the external examination (i.e. be eligible for an ATAR) or Complete a Certificate II or higher.  Complete at least 20 units (or equivalents) including a minimum of 10 Year 12 units.  Complete two Year 11 English units and a pair of Year 12 English units.

7 To achieve a WACE students must:  Complete at least one pair of units from a Year 12 List A course (arts / languages / social sciences) and one pair of units from a Year 12 List B course (mathematics / sciences / technologies)  A minimum of 14 C grades must be achieved over Year 11 and Year 12 units (or equivalents) including at least 6 C grades in Year 12 units (or equivalents).

8 All students (whether they have achieved the WACE or not) will receive a Western Australian Statement of Student Achievement (WASSA) – a record of all courses and or programs completed.

9  To achieve a WACE from 2016 and beyond, all students will need to be eligible for a university entrance rank (ATAR) or achieve a training Certificate II or higher.  They will also need to demonstrate a minimum standard of literacy and numeracy. To do this they will be required to complete the Online Literacy and Numeracy Assessment (OLNA).

10 What types of courses are there?  ATAR courses – for students who are aiming to go to university and will need to sit an external exam which will get them an ATAR.  General courses – for students aiming to enter further training or the workforce straight from school. These are not examined. Certificate programs are included in this category.

11 What types of courses are there?  Foundation courses – for those students who need extra support to meet the literacy and numeracy standard by the end of Year 12.  Foundation courses are recommended only for those students who have not passed the OLNA tests. Once they pass, students will be promoted into a general course.

12 What pathways exist at TSHS? If you are an ATAR student (i.e. bound for tertiary studies) it is recommended you select one of the following ATAR course pathways:- i.4 ATAR, 1 General course and 1 Certificate* ii.5 ATAR and 1 Certificate course* iii.6 ATAR courses (Only possible for students who select Maths Specialist) * Excluding Community Services and Hospitality certificate courses

15 What other programs are there?  There are also Vocational Education and Training (VET) programs and Endorsed programs which contribute to WACE equivalence and address areas of learning not covered by courses.  TSHS is a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) and has a range of VET programs on scope

17 Vocational Education & Training  VET programs contribute to WACE equivalence and address areas of learning not covered by courses.  VET programs are nationally accredited and consistent with the requirements of the Australian Qualifications Framework.  Students can mix and match ATAR, General & VET programs to provide the best platform to meet the requirements to achieve a WACE.

18 Vocational Education & Training VET equivalences For a completed Certificate II, the achievement of units of competency must be a minimum of 220 hours.

19 Vocational Education & Training  The required 220 hours is completed over two years – 110 hours per year in two WL blocks. (Semester 1 and 2)  At this point in time only students enrolled in the Hospitality & Childcare programs will be doing WL in 2016, however, Wood and Engineering programs are being investigated to clarify the WL requirement.  Students selecting ATAR courses should not select a certificate that requires WL.

20 Endorsed Programs Thornlie SHS delivers the following Endorsed Program: Workplace Learning is an Authority ‐ developed endorsed program that is managed by individual schools. To complete this program, a student works in one or more real workplace/s to develop a set of transferable workplace skills.

21 Endorsed Programs  Students may accrue a maximum of two Year 11 units and two Year 12 units in Workplace Learning to contribute towards their WACE.  A student can only use endorsed programs for 2 units of equivalence in Year 11 and two units in Year 12 - but this must be considered in relation to the total number of equivalences being claimed for through VET.

37 Subject Selections Online (SSO) To select subjects from 2016 onwards, students must do this online. A deposit will be required to be paid for subjects to be selected. No deposit = no subjects The following screens will show the process you will carry out.

38 SSO: where to find the icon Go to the Thornlie Senior High School website and click on the icon for SSO. thornlieshs.wa.edu.au

39 SSO: Login screen You will receive in the mail login details which will be the STUDENTS details. This will be surname and a pin number for the password.

40 SSO: Information page This page will require you to choose whether you will be studying ATAR or General Courses. If you select Unsure, you will be prompted to attend a meeting. This selection is at the bottom of the page.

41 SSO: Appointment If you are unsure of your pathway or have questions regarding selecting subjects, please indicate “Make Appointment” at step 1 and it will take you to this screen to do this (still to be set up) This is also available at step 20.

51 SSO: Optional Costs Once all subjects and reserves have been selected, the next screen is an information screen of the “Optional and Voluntary Approved Requests”.

52 SSO: Check List You will then be prompted with this Check list – any items in RED are steps that need to be entered or fixed.

53 SSO: Payment Options You will then be prompted with the available payment options.

54 The next screen will allow you to print off a Payment printout as well as a Selection printout for your records.
