1 Power Over Ethernet (DTE Power via MDI) Prepared by Sales & Marketing Department TOPLINK C&C CORPORATION

2 What is Power Over Ethernet Power over Ethernet (PoE) is the ability for the LAN switching infrastructure to provide power over a copper Ethernet cable to an endpoint (Powered Device). As Wireless networking emerged, Power over Ethernet was also used to power these devices to allow for deployments in locations where local power access did not exist. While IP telephones and wireless access points are the most intuitive uses for PoE, the advent of 802.3af standardization of PoE opens the door to a new generation of networked-attached devices such as video cameras, point-of-sale devices, security access control (card scanners), building automation and industrial automation just to name a few.

3 The specification for PoE The specification for PoE calls for two devices: Power source equipment (PSE) Power source equipment (PSE) Powered device (PD). Powered device (PD).

4 Applications for Power over Ethernet PoE Ethernet Switch (PSE device) PoE Ethernet Switch (PSE device) PoE Power Injector (PSE device) PoE Power Injector (PSE device) PoE Power Splitter (PD device) PoE Power Splitter (PD device) IP Phone (PD device) IP Phone (PD device) Network Camera (PD device) Network Camera (PD device) WLAN AP (PD device) WLAN AP (PD device) Network security gate control (PD device) Network security gate control (PD device)
