3 The Values of Inclusion
Everyone is born in All means all Everyone needs to be in Everyone needs to be with Everyone is ready Everyone needs support Everyone can communicate Everyone can learn Everyone can contribute Together we are better Down Under Institute Presentation - Heather Simmons 11 mins You Tube Acknowledgement to Marsha Forest, Jack Pearpoint, John O’Brienhttp:/ / Everyone is born in - from the moment you were born we are all born into common humanity – we all have skin, hair etc people with disability are human and equal citizens community – we are only excluded later! All MEANS All – Everyone should be included – everyone is capable of breathing even if people need support to breathe. No one is too difficult.. Too challenging. ALL MEANS ALL!!! Everyone needs to be in – physical access really important if people are physically excluded they have to be physically included! Think about universal access for everyone, mums with prams . If you are not physically -present no one will know that you are missing. Everyone needs to be with – being there is necessary – but being with takes time and effort. It’s about connections and relationships with people – we have to ensure that we support people to be part of and in community. Without connection we are all at risk of isolation, segregation and lonliness. Everyone is ready – you do not have to pass a test to be eligible to be part of community. Everyone needs support – some need it more than others – none of us are independent of others…. I need help to get my hair done, take care of my health etc what do you need support with? Everyone can communicate – just because a person doesn’t use words it doe’snt mean that they don’t have anything to say!!! Find what works we have to work harder to hear peoples’ voices. Everyone can learn – we all need opportunities to learn and grow, try new things, grow as individuals – everyone can learn and we need to be able to be better teachers. Everyone can contribute – we all have strengths, gifts and talents to contribute – we need to be able to find ways of recognising and using each persons unique contribution. Together we are better – Diversity brings strengths and we can all learn and grow by knowing one another.

4 SO……ALL MEANS ALL

5 Can you think of a time when you were excluded from something?
Inclusion/Exclusion Can you think of a time when you were excluded from something? What happened? Who was there? What did they say? What did they do? How did you feel? What did you do? Many people who experience disability live lives of extreme loneliness and isolation. Many depend almost exclusively on their families for companionship. Some people have lost their connections to family, relying on people who arepaid to be with them for their social support. We are going to do an exercise to support people to understand the feelings of inclusion and exclusion . ask people to remember a time in which they felt “excluded,” it is likely you will get answers of feeling dejected, unimportant, aggressive, depressed, alienated, awkward. Conclusion

6 Inclusion/Exclusion Can you think of a time when you were included into something? What happened? Who was there? What did they say? What did they do? How did you feel? What did you do? Ask people to think about a time in their lives in which they felt “included,” “welcome,” “a part of.” It could be a party held in their honour to celebrate a special event in their lives. Ask them to describe how it felt – record their words and responses on posters – likely you will get words like happy, satisfied, warm, special, secure, needed, loved, rooted, important, content, fulfilled, joyful, pleasant, embraced, involved, welcome, valued, loved, supported, comfortable, like I can be myself, I don't have to impress anyone, accepted, not being judged, part of, admired, etc.

7 Guess what? Being excluded Hurts!
LONELINESS IS THE ONLY TRUE DISABILITY This slide Speaks for itself!

8 So support people to get included by;
Helping the person you support to connect with people in the community who love the same things! Many friendships are forged because we share a common interest with another person!! It is important that people belong in community and as support workers the best way to ensure that people do not leads isolated lives is to provide people with an opportunity to build relationships with people who will care about them. It is also the best way to keep vulnerable people safe. Make Connections – build relationships – Be included!
