Adding Value to Content The Libraries role in the Future Debbie Dore CCO

What I will cover  Outcomes of a recent independent survey asking libraries about their role now and in the future  A summary of the key findings  Some possible solutions and ideas to help meet the challenge  Where should we spend our time?  Summary

Independent survey carried out by ICSB  Focussed on the role of the library now and in the future  Over 400 responses 40% Academic in Higher/Further Education 13% Government 12% Corporate 8% Medical 8% Research Institutes 5% Public Libraries 14% others  In most cases respondents had users located over several sites in one Country with only 14% having international spread

Top 3 uses of resources and content provided by the Library  40% Support research as a core activity of the organisation  30% Intellectual development or education of knowledge workers  18% Reference Material

Allocation of staff

What are the key responsibilities of your library?

Policy towards print or electronic  55% mixed depending on topic and availability  29% e preferred – always by e if possible  12% print preferred  2% e only – avoid buying any print  2% print only – avoid buying e content

Primary focus now and in 3 Years time

Top 4 challenges users are facing  Desire for remote, instant access  Too much content, need help to find relevant content  Understanding the quality of information through search engines such as Google  Keeping up to date on topics which are of interest to them

What conclusions can we draw from this?  Adding value to Users and Research increases in importance for the future  Discovering relevant content is key to the user experience  Demands continue to grow for  Instant access  Multi device  Any time any place  Improving workflow  Results the Library can help deliver become significantly more important in the future than in the past

3 ideas and possible solutions  Workflow and Social Media tools your users already use and how you can add value to them  Role document delivery can play  How tools like text mining and semantic fingerprinting can improve results

Adding value to research

How are your researchers working today?  Most are working through a collaboration, social media platform  They are storing, sharing and annotating key documents  What they are doing is often invisible to you with only a limited view of how content is being used  Yet you are securing the content, the funding and the licence for their work  How can you step in, add value and show the true value of what you are contributing too?

+ 1.5M users The 10 largest University bases are: University of Cambridge MIT Stanford University Imperial College London University of Michigan University of Oxford Harvard University University College London Cornell University University of Washington Mendeley The world’s largest research collaboration platform Network of 1,000 “Mendeley Advisors” on campuses around the world

MENDELEY FOR END USERS Setting New Standards In Research Collaboration

Mendeley Is The world’s largest research database +145 Million user-uploaded documents

Manage References & Citations – Generate citations and bibliographies in Microsoft Word, OpenOffice and Latex Discover Content and Peers – Discover papers, people and public groups in their field. View trends in their research discipline. Read & Annotate Articles – Open PDFs and capture thoughts with sticky notes and highlights Add & Organize Papers – Import and Organize PDFs from their computer, EndNote™, Papers or Zotero Mendeley Users can

Collaborate – Connect and participate in subject specific groups. Safely and securely share papers, notes and annotations with peers. Back Up, Sync and Send to Mobile – Access papers on the web, iPhone, iPad or Tablet PC Mendeley Users can

What we’ve heard from our Academic Customers: To avoid: What is happening in the world is bypassing university libraries acc. to Peter Murray-Rust (Chemistry Professor at Cambridge) Introducing MIE Research is done for over 50% in social networks outside the library.* The library’s contribution to students and researchers will be questioned Libraries have to prove their value to the management of the university. Some librarians try to understand how to support research better in their work. Librarians are searching for the right ways and tools to do so, without sacrificing their other responsiblities. The libraries will have to prove how they support research output. * McKinsey* McKinsey report November 2011

Mendeley & MIE MIE is a module developed on top of Mendeley’s existing end-user model to enable the Library to add value to the process and workflow of research in their institution

Mendeley & MIE

MIE – Analytics Analytics Overview outlines what areas you can monitor. Top 5 of each topic are included in the overview screen. Click on any section header or tab to get more detailed information.

MIE – Analytics Real time analysis and reporting Print/Download information

MIE – Analytics View data for All time/This year/This month Real time analysis and reporting

MIE – Analytics Compare one journal against another Real time analysis and reporting

MIE – Analytics Examine what content different types of user are reading Real time analysis and reporting

MIE – Analytics You can also view the Top Journals and Highly Read Documents Real time analysis and reporting

MIE – Analytics With a few clicks MIE users can generate detailed analysis reports. Here, 4 titles have been selected for comparison, a user discipline has been chosen and the time frame of This Year has been selected. Each click instantly updates the graph, providing detailed information at lightning quick speed. Real time analysis and reporting

MIE – Analytics Quickly uncover gaps in your collection If your library has a valid subscription to a title, or it is freely available (OpenAccess) then users can save the document to their personal libraries. If access is unavailable, the user can save a reference (Metadata) to their library instead.

MIE – Analytics View which titles your members are publishing in and at what level.

MIE – Analytics See which users have been published most frequently

MIE – Analytics View the impact of those publications Compare the impact of your members’ publications against those of other institutions

The library starts working where the research is happening Maximising use of subscribed content Seeing true usage Improving selection of content for the future Library adds value to the user and the research community in their institution In Summary

Document Delivery to Mobile Library

How can document delivery help?  Address the users desire for instant access  Provide multi device content  Make something that is only available in print instantly accessible for the user wherever they are  Yet allow you to still keep control through authorisation  Can help identify content you should in the future subscribe to or save cost

How can you integrate journals and documents/articles to achieve the best result for users?  Many examples where Pharmaceuticals and Corporate libraries now have a new model for what was their traditional Library Service  Successfully reduced both staffing and content budgets and yet score a higher level of end user satisfaction

What process did they go through?  Identified core journals with high usage  Wherever possible moved to e with off site access  Where no e exists but material was perceived to be high value set up a central print repository  Used a document delivery service to fill requests outside of this content  Regularly reviewed usage and requests to define collection for the following year

Gives you:  Access to the world’s largest collection of STM Content  Over 140 publisher relationships  Over 10 million volumes of print content  Other 3rd party sources  The industry’s fastest turnaround time  Over 80% or requests typically delivered in under 5 minutes  Real-time document sourcing and copyright clearance  High Quality PDF Delivery Document Delivery via Infotrieve
