Elements of Using Notebooks/Journals Curricular Goals Structure Manage- ment Activities Assessment

Quick List What are the “curricular goals” for your robotics club or science classroom? 1. 2. 3. 4. …

Structure and Management

Setting Norms for the Daily Management of Your Notebook Draw a line down the center of one page in your notebook. On the left side write our important Norms you use (or might use) for your notebook. After individually putting down my norms, share them with a partner. Discuss them. On the right side, of the paper write about your norms and what you would change.

Frameworks for Structuring A Notebook Entry/Exit Journals Sections Notebook (e.g. Engineering Design—PBTRR) SPACE Before-During-After Journal Two-sided Interactive Notebook

Examples of Entries that Support Different Activities List/Sequence entry Before-During-After entry Problem-Cause-Solution entry Focused Question- Prediction-Result Trial-Error entry Vocabulary entries Reflective entry

How Will YOU Use Notebooks Review your curricular goals Consider the role you see the notebook playing in promoting those goals Consider how the notebook can be a tool and scaffold for the students to reach your curricular goals Working alone or together 1.Write your Structure or Framework for using notebooks (Remember: Simplicity is a virtue. Be ready to discuss how this framework fits your curricular goals—i.e. how will you use it for your teaching and your students’ learning.)

Sharing

Exit Entry Date: July 14, 2014 Type: Exit journal What do I feel I have accomplish here today? What will I do next? Write without speaking for five minutes.
