4 Rational Number Operation Learning Goal
Students will be able to apply the operations of addition and subtraction to rational numbers, represent the operations on a number line diagram, and solve real world problems. Students will be able to recognize opposites and absolute value.

7 7.NS.1 Vocab Terms Vocabulary Terms Definition Negative Numbers
#’s left of Zero (0), negative sign (-) Positive Numbers #’s right of Zero, positive sign (+) Opposites, or Number Pairs, are the same distance from zero but in opposite directions Integers are ALL positive and negative WHOLE #’s Rational Numbers Ratio of 2 integers (like fractions); Repeating or terminating decimals Absolute Value the distance a number is from zero. Absolute value is ALWAYS Positive. Additive Inverse What you add to a number to get zero. Ex: The additive inverse of -5 is 5 because = 0 The additive inverse of +5 is -5 because = 0 Algorithm Community Property

9 Today, my learning target is to…
• Develop algorithms for subtracting integers • Model subtraction of integers using distance and direction on a number line and a chip model • Observe that the Commutative Property does not hold for subtraction of rational numbers
