2 Recall, what is a government expected to do?

3 Why is it necessary to maintain law and order? To maintain peace among the people. To ensure that trading activities can be carried out smoothly.

4 Problems British faced in maintaining law & order Main problem in the 1820s: crime. – Arrival of more immigrants  made keeping law and order more difficult. From mid-1850s, British government faced other major problems…and implemented measures in an attempt to resolve these problems.

5 Queen Victoria’s Orders I wish to learn more about what the British government has done to maintain law and order in Singapore. I want your committee to evaluate the measures that the British government took and explain how we can make improvements OR even implement new measures.

6 TASK: Queen Victoria’s Committees You are to refer to the textbook p63-67 and the information assigned to your committee. You should decide and explain if the British government should – Continue with the measures the government implemented – Make improvements to these measures, OR – Implement new measures.
