Westminster Christian Fellowship Buzzcard Access Control System Benjamin Davis Nathan Firesheets Mark Whitmer May 3, 2010 School of Electrical and Computer Engineering Georgia Institute of Technology

Project Overview Upgraded existing WCF access control system to include RFID support and a web interface, and comply with life safety codes Cost $850 to control Dining Room door

Design Objectives TaskAccomplished? Add RFID card readersYes Retain existing magnetic stripe card readerYes Upgrade door hardware to meet codeYes Implement secure web administration interfaceYes Maintain secure access log offsiteYes

Old System Single door Magnetic stripe card reader Magnetic lock RS-232 terminal administration

New System (Interior) Installed Electric Strike Lock: Electric Strike Mounts Here Panic Bar Mounts Here Proposed Crash Bar & Strike:

New System (Exterior) RFID Card Reader Mounts Here Door Pull Handle Mounts Here Proposed RFID Reader & Pull Handle: Existing Magnetic Stripe Card Reader Installed Pull Handle and RFID Reader:

Control System Functional Diagram The Web Administrator eBox Single Board Computer (Authorized Card Database) PIC Microcontroller Board (Door Hardware Electrical Interface) Optical Isolation Readers Strike Solid State Relay

SBC Software Functional Diagram MySQL Database Web Server The Web Serial Bridge Process To PIC RS-232 ODBC

Web Interface Functionality Administrators: ▫User management – create, remove, change ▫Card authorization – add and remove cards from users ▫Log review ▫Lock/unlock event scheduling Other user privileges (assignable to individual users) ▫Change own password for web interface ▫Building access via web (iPhone, laptop) ▫Lock/unlock doors (dogging/“double-tap”)

Web Interface

Web Interface – User Management

Actual Design Cost ComponentCost PIC microcontroller$5 eBox single board computer (SBC)$200 RFID Reader$25 Electric strike lock$355 Panic bar$110 Misc. Hardware Components$100 Misc. Electronic Components$55 Labor$0 Total Cost$850 Proposed Cost-$800 Over Budget$50

Current Progress Crash bar, surface-mount strike, RFID readers installed and fully operational PIC board receives card info from magnetic stripe and RFID readers and outputs to SBC SBC running appropriate software Web interface user management and door control complete SBC outputs commands to PIC board, which locks and unlocks electric strike

Acceptance Testing TestProposedMeasured False negative card scans<3%<1% False positive card scans0% Unauthorized web access0% Web interface door open<5 seconds<2 seconds Card reader door open<5 seconds<2 seconds Activation of credentials effective100% Deactivation of credentials effective100%

System Transition Plan Existing system still fully operational and connected to magnetic card reader New system connected to RFID reader Add users to new database Take existing system offline, remove existing hardware from system enclosure Install new hardware in system enclosure Connect magnetic card reader to new system Bring new system online

Schedule Project demonstration – May 3 Transition from old system to new – May 6 New system fully operational – May 7
