PEACE EUCHARIST Prepared for house meetings presided over by lay people

Gathering The person presiding: In this world of conflict, between many tribes and nations, we are gathered together at this point in time and space to meet in unity with the whole company of heaven and with the universal church. We come in the name of the Father of all creation, the Son who saves us and the Holy Spirit who empowers us. All: Praise and glory, and wisdom and thanks, and honour and power and strength, be to our God for ever and ever. Alleluia. Amen.

Opening A Hymn may be sung. President: Let us say together the prayer that Jesus taught us. All: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen. President: We offer ourselves to work for your creation to become your kingdom on earth.

Confession All: Father, we confess that we do not always live in peace, even within ourselves and with those we love. We often do not love our neighbours as ourselves, and we are prejudiced towards those we do not consider to be one of us. We confess that we have harboured enmity towards those who are against us. We have failed to grasp that all mankind are created in your image as your children. President: Father, forgive us we pray. All: Father, giver of life, heal us and free us for abundant life through Jesus Christ. Holy Spirit, change us from within by your quickening power; help us to listen; inspire us to understand peoples and cultures different from our own. Silence for a time. All: The God of love, who forgives all who truly repent, has released us from our sins and reconciled us. President: May God’s peace be real to us, even in the midst of turmoil. Each person to each other: Peace to you.

The Word Bible reading(s), followed by a talk. A Hymn may be sung.

The Prayers Everyone is encouraged to offer a prayer. At the end of the prayers: President: O God of Peace, giver of every perfect gift, who sent your Son to be our Peace, thank you for hearing us. All: By your Holy Spirit empower us to be channels of your peace in the world.

The Offering (1) President: Lord Jesus, we recall your birth, your life, your death and rising from the dead. Enable us to live as you did, and to anticipate with joy your return to earth. All: And so, Father, remembering how Christ sacrificed himself for us; believing that his life did not end in his death, and realising his presence here among us, we do as he told us: we offer ourselves to do what you wish us to do for the peace of your world. The bread and wine are brought out by two members, as did Melchisedek after the Battle of the Kings (Genesis 14:18) Gifts may also be brought.

The Offering (2) A Member: Blessed are you, Lord, God of all creation. Through your goodness we have this bread to offer, which earth has given and human hands have made. It will become for us the bread of life, through our Saviour, Jesus Christ. Another member: Blessed are you, Lord, God of all creation. Through your goodness we have this wine to offer, fruit of the vine and work of human hands. It will become your lifeblood for us. President: Lord, you invite us, who are made in your image, but fallen in sin and raised in forgiveness, to do as you did with your pure, holy and spotless hands. All: By the power of your Holy Spirit may this Bread and Wine become for us your Body and your Blood. Amen.

The Consecration All are invited to say the words in inverted commas President: On the night that he was betrayed, Jesus had supper with his friends. He took bread, gave thanks and broke it in pieces. He shared it with them and said: “Take and eat; this is my body, given for you.” After supper he took the cup of wine and thanked his Father for it. Then he gave it to them and said “Drink this, all of you. This is my blood of the new covenant, poured out for many. Do this as a way of remembering me.” Silence for a time

The Breaking of the Bread The President breaks the bread into small pieces and says: Come, Lord, feed us with your spiritual food and spiritual drink, live in us that we may grow in you. The gift of God to share among us. All: Though we are many, we are one body for we all share the one loaf.

Sharing the Bread & Wine Hymns may be sung. Each person hands the bread to his/her neighbour and says: The body of Christ. The neighbour replies Amen and eats the piece of bread. Each person then passes the cup of wine and says: The blood of Christ. The neighbour replies Amen and drinks from the cup. President: Father, we thank you for feeding us with the body and blood of your Son, Jesus Christ. May we be open to receive your Spirit of power, freedom and love. All: That we may be willing to be a living sacrifice for the Peace of your world, and that through Christ who is our Peace we may bear the hatred between enemies, and so free them to become friends. President: Build in us your character that we may be conformed to your likeness.

Ministry Silence for a time. A TIME OF MUTUAL MINISTRY MAY FOLLOW

Dismissal and Blessing A Hymn may be included. President: God has reconciled the world to himself, through Jesus Christ. All: And has entrusted to us his Ministry of Reconciliation. All, raising their hand: The Blessing of God who is Love, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, be with us and all who work for peace. Amen. President: We go in peace to do the will of God. All: Empower us to be your peacemakers. June 2006 © CHIPS Ref No IJE 19505
