4  According to the National Literacy Mission Authority (NLMA), an adult literate is one who can: Read aloud - 30 words per minute Read with understanding - road signs, posters and news papers Copying with understanding - 7 words per minute Who is an Adult Literate?

5 Taking dictation at the rate of 7 words per minute Reading and writing numbers from 1 to 100 Doing simple calculation - addition, subtraction, multiplication and division  Conversely, an adult illiterate is one who when tested cannot perform any of the above functions.

6  Selecting non-literates adult (15+ years), especially women & impart basic literacy  Active participation of Rotarians as volunteers  Open Adult Literacy Centres Activities included in an Adult Literacy Project (ALP)

7  Staff education  Continuing Education Program (CEP)  Vocational Training for skill development/ skill up gradation Activities included in an Adult Literacy Project (ALP)

11 Certification process for Adult Learners Examinations and certification through National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS), routed through the State Literacy Mission Authority (SLMA) in each state. Request for examination should be made at the start of the batch Notify the SLMA of the details of the adult learner batches

12 The SLMA will in turn write to the NIOS and request for the examinations to be conducted by NIOS evaluators who will come to the ALCs with the examination papers and monitor the examination process. Follow up with the SLMA to ensure certification is completed correctly. Certification process for Adult Learners

13  To prevent a lapse back into illiteracy, become the Shiksha Sathi of the freshly certified Adult Literates  Weekly revision classes  Quiz contests and fun group activities Continuing Education Program

14  Motivate learners with gifts and prizes  Inculcate a habit of reading newspapers  Keep up the CEP for a period of two years Continuing Education Program

15  Club funds or corporates /philanthropic individuals  RILM grants: RILM Grant for Primer Procurement: Rs. 40/- per primer if 100 primers bought/printed RILM Grant for Volunteer Honorarium: Rs. 250/- per learner Financing an ALP

16  Can they read a newspaper?  Can they read their Aadhar Card?  Can they open/operate a bank account?  Can they read road signs, bus numbers, posters etc.? Impact Assessment

17  Attend Level II Training Program  Understand the modalities of ALP  Set goals for the Club  Discuss the Program at the Club level  Conduct survey to select adult non-literates. Counsel those selected Responsibilities of CP/CLCC

18  Select a venue for the Adult Literacy Centres  Notify District Adult Literacy Committee Chair of number of primers required and volunteer teachers that require training. Seek guidance for these logistics  Recruit and train volunteers for survey, skill training  If seeking grant from RILM, do online application  Upload completed ALP on website.
