1 Shemi Wâd 1817 - 1897 Shemi Wâd was one of Goodwick's "characters", remembered for his tall tales. He lived in a small, whitewashed cottage in Broom Street, Goodwick, later believed to be renamed Duke Street, opposite Berachah Chapel. He never had a proper job; he went round farms killing pigs, and also did some gardening work for the local ladies, and of course grew some enormous fruit and vegetables. Some of his habits were neither healthy nor nice. He was known as the best tobacco-spitter around, and anyone doubting his stories was not safe six feet away. He smoked a lot. He drank a lot. He itched a lot. Some people went so far as to say that he made a deliberate habit of scratching himself so that, when he was in Barsi's grocery shop and standing by the cheese, the grocer would give him a nice free piece in order to get rid of him. But who knows the truth of such a remark? Shemi was a past master at making things up. It would have been just like him to start such rumours himself. Despite all this, Shemi was a character who was loved by everyone who knew him. Shemi passed away on the 2nd of January 1897 at the age of 80. There is no evidence that he had any family living when he died so his friends got together to pay for him to have a decent burial and a proper tombstone on his grave in Rhos-y-Caerau, Pencaer which faces the wonderful scenery of Garn Fawr, Garn Fechan and Garn Folch. The words carved on his stone are apt: "Cyfaill i bawb, a hoff gan bawb. A friend to all, and loved by all." Biography
