5  The answer to the question of how do you produce electricity from solar energy is easier to understand once you have a knowledge of the components required to convert solar energy to electricity.  Before you're able to produce electricity through solar energy, there needs to be some form of solar cell or panel that will be used to absorb the sun's energy. Solar panels are constructed from a semi-conductive material with the most common material of choice being silicon. The semi-conductive material contains electrons which will naturally just stay there not doing anything.  When photons (contained within the suns rays) hit a solar cell, the electrons contained in the solar cell material absorb this solar energy, which transforms the electrons into conduction electrons. If the energy of these photons is great enough then the electrons are able to become free and carry an electric charge through a circuit to the destination.  So there we have a basic understand of how you produce electricity from solar energy.

6  The use of solar power in the home is becoming an attractive proposition for a growing number of people. Once thought of as an idea only found in science fiction, solar power is now becoming a very real prospect. Many people use solar power by harnessing the sun's energy to heat their homes and to run different appliances. It is an economical and earth-friendly way to bring power into the home.solar power  There are a number of ways you can use solar power in the home. Some homes in California run basically from solar power. The utility bills for these zero-energy homes have cut power consumption by 50 to 70%.  Once implemented in the home, solar power can be used to heat the home. You can also use solar power to generate hot water. When you use solar power in the home, you not only lower utility bills, but also add value to your home when you come to sell it.

7 Solar energy is not available at night, and energy storage is an important issue because modern energy systems usually assume continuous availability of energy. Thermal mass systems can store solar energy in the form of heat at domestically useful temperatures for daily or seasonal durations. Thermal storage systems generally use readily available materials with high specific heat capacities such as water, earth and stone. Well-designed systems can lower peak demand, shift time-of-use to off-peak hours and reduce overall heating and cooling requirements. Phase change materials such as paraffin wax and Glauber's salt are another thermal storage media. 8  The creation of solar panels typically involves cutting crystalline silicon into tiny disks less than a centimeter thick. These thin, wafer-like disks are then carefully polished and treated to repair and gloss any damage from the slicing process. After polishing, dopants (materials added to alter an electrical charge in a semiconductor or photovoltaic solar cell) and metal conductors are spread across each disk. The conductors are aligned in a thin, grid-like matrix on the top of the solar panel, and are spread in a flat, thin sheet on the side facing the earth. To protect the solar panels after processing, a thin layer of cover glass is then bonded to the top of the photovoltaic cell. After the bonding of protective glass, the nearly-finished panel is attached to a subtrate by an expensive, thermally conductive cement. The thermally conductive property of the cement keep the solar panel from becoming overheated; any leftover energy that the solar panel is unable to convert to electricity would otherwise overheat the unit and reduce the efficiency of the solar cells.
