15 INSTITUTE OF LEATHER INDUSTRY www.ips.lodz.pl WP 8 Investigating the safety of using shoes by: - determining the level of hazardous substances- determining the level of hazardous substances - examining the dynamic migration of substances in material- examining the dynamic migration of substances in material systemssystems

16 INSTITUTE OF LEATHER INDUSTRY www.ips.lodz.pl There are chemicals particularly dangerous to human health and the surrounding environment. They can cause serious diseases in adults, but also cause disturbances in children’s proper development. This group of chemicals is under special “supervision” of European Union legal articles, which undoubtedly means a detailed inspection of their presence in articles intended for use by the consumer. The presence of some of the substances classified as hazardous was determined in skin samples supplied in the project. The presence of some of the substances classified as hazardous was determined in skin samples supplied in the project.

17 INSTITUTE OF LEATHER INDUSTRY www.ips.lodz.pl Dimethyl fumarate (DMF) is a biocide, the use of which is prohibited in the E U. On May 15, 2012, the Regulation of the European Commission obliging member states to ensure that products containing DMF have not been placed on the market. Dibutyl phthalate is used mainly in plastic production as a plasticizer for polyvinyl chloride, but also as a plasticizer in the manufacture of sealants, adhesives, and printing inks, used in rubber processing Azo dyes - due to their properties, are widely used in industry, among other things for dyeing leather, fabrics. Some azo dyes may release (by chemical reduction or by enzymes action) aromatic amines, which in many cases have carcinogenic effect in the human body.

18 INSTITUTE OF LEATHER INDUSTRY www.ips.lodz.pl Gas chromatogram of a genuine leather sample containing a standard solution of dimethyl fumarate obtained by capillary chromatography

19 INSTITUTE OF LEATHER INDUSTRY www.ips.lodz.pl Conclusion Hazardous aromatic amines and dimethyl fumarate phthalate compounds have not been present in the tested leathers. The next step It is necessary to check and test consumer products and raw materials used for their production for the presence of hazardous chemicals.

INSTITUTE OF LEATHER INDUSTRY www.ips.lodz.pl For the project needs a material base having a positive or neutral impact on health and comfort has been developed for the shoes made for a person with diabetic foot syndrome. This database contains a list of different materials from which several samples that initially portended well for the future have been chosen. In progress
