Persuasio n

Writers who persuade want people to change their minds or take action about something. Persuasive essay relies chiefly on a reasoned analysis of a point. In other words, to attain the goal of persuading people, a (speech) writer has to offer them a reasoned analysis and then set forth evidence that supports his or her claim. When writing a persuasive essay, you almost always have to:

1. Begin with the background. 2. State your main idea. 3. Present opposing opinions and respond to them.

Take for example Dr. King’s most famous speech “I Have a Dream.” Paragraph 1 gives the background of his time: “in spite of the difficulties and frustrations of the moment I still have a dream.” Paragraph 2 states his main point: “all men are created equal.” Paragraphs 3-5 reveal opposing opinions and then respond to them: “my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.”

Exercise A: 1. Study the Reading of Unit 4 again. Write down two sentences from Paragraph 2 that indicate the background of a worldwide water shortage. _______________________________________ Today, many countries face a serious water shortage, and the problem will only get worse. The International Water Management Institute (IWMI) predicts that by 2025, severe water shortages will affect 2 to 3 billion people.

2. Write a topic sentence that persuades people to conserve water with the words given below._______________________________________ _______________________________________ (to avoid/crisis/predict by/IWMI/people/all around/world/should/work together /conserve/water) To avoid the crisis predicted by IWMI, people all around the world should work together to conserve water.

3. Find two sentences from Paragraph 3 in the Reading of Unit 4 that indicate the percentage of the unusable and usable water on earth, and use this to respond to the opposing opinion: Water was always there when people wanted it: whether for drinking, washing clothes, or bathing. _______________________________________ _______________________________________ _______________________________________ It is important to remember that 97 percent of the Earth’s water is in the oceans, and most of the rest is frozen in the polar ice caps.

_______________________________________ _______________________________________ That means that less than 1 percent of the world’s water is usable. Hence, water conservation is definitely a must for all mankind.

Exercise B: Combine the above sentences you have written down into a paragraph. Remember to use proper transitional vocabulary when combining the opposing opinions and responses. Finally, write a concluding sentence with the words given below. ______________________________________________________________________________ (therefore/water conservation/definitely/a must/all mankind)
