3 1 The first apparition Macbeth
The witches have called up spirits to answer Macbeth’s questions at the beginning of Act 4

4 2 “Your castle is surprised; your wife and babes Savagely slaughtered. To relate the manner, Were, on the quarry of these murdered deer, To add the death of you.”

5 2 Ross Macduff Ross has come to England to convince Macduff and Malcolm to come back and fight for Scotland and has to tell Macduff that his family has been murdered

6 3 “Unspeak mine own detraction, here abjure The taints and blames I laid upon myself, For strangers to my nature. I am yet Unknown to woman, never was forsworn, Scarcely have coveted what was mine own, At no time broke my faith, would not betray The devil to his fellow, and delight No less in truth than life. My first false speaking Was this upon myself.”

7 3 Malcolm Macduff Malcolm has just finished convincing Macduff that he would be a worse king than Macbeth and now

8 4 “Double, double, toil and trouble Fire burn and cauldron bubble!”

9 4 The Witches Themselves
The witches are casting a spell prior to meeting with Macbeth

10 5 “What I am truly, Is thine and my poor country’s to command: Whither indeed, before they here-approach, Old Siward, with ten thousand warlike men, Already at a point, was setting forth.”

11 5 Malcolm Macduff Malcolm has tested Macduff and found him to be true and is now willing to share his battle plans with him

12 6 “Wisdom! To leave his wife, to leave his babes, His mansion and his titles, in a place From when himself does fly? He loves us not…”

13 6 Lady Macduff Ross Macduff has left his family back in Scotland and unprotected which has made his wife angry

14 7 “Thou art too like the spirit of Banquo. Down! Thy crown does sear mine eyelids. And thy hair, Thou other gold-bound brow, is like the first. A third is like the former. Filthy hags! Why do you show me this? A fourth! Start, eyes! What will the line stretch out to th’ crack of doom? Another yet! A seventh! I’ll see no more. And yet an eighth appears, who bears a glass Which shows me many more”

15 7 Macbeth The fourth apparition
The witches are answering Macbeth’s question of whether or not Banquo’s children will be kings

16 8 “Macduff, this noble passion, Child of integrity, hath from my soul Wiped the black scruples, reconciled my thoughts To thy good truth and honor.”

17 8 Malcolm Macduff Macduff has convinced Malcolm that he is not a spy and is trustworthy.
