1. Donning PPE (with PAPR) Level 2 12-23-14

2. The emerging EBOLA preparedness is new for our nation and our organizations. Information changes rapidly, sometimes daily based on new findings. This information is current as of 12/23/14 and is based on CDC recommendations/guidelines. Products used in the pictures are based on the Medline Level 2 kits. Your products may differ based on your facility. The principles remain the same. Consult your Infection Prevention Specialist or the Clinical Nurse Educator at your facility for further guidance or for any questions you may have. Introduction

3. Preparation Change into clean surgical scrubs or provided disposable garments and dedicated washable footwear You will wear your own socks and underwear Ensure that your nails are no longer than a quarter of an inch so they do not puncture the gloves. No personal items (e.g., jewelry, watches, cell phones, pagers, pens) should be brought into the patient room. Empty your pockets. Tie back hair and pin up off shoulders.

4. Go to the bathroom before donning PPE. Hydrate by drinking 6-8 oz. of a non-caffeinated drink No food/gum in mouth Ensure all PPE is correct size for associate and inspected for flaws Donning will occur in the designated donning area Will need 2 people for donning  Associate caring for the patient  Trained Observer who will read aloud each step of the procedure from the checklist Preparation

5. Hand hygiene & Head cover bouffant capshower cap

6. Inner Gloves Put on gloves, pull cuffs up to cover wrists. Gloves should be a snug fit. ( actual appearance of gloves may differ by facility )

7. Impervious Coveralls Put on impervious coveralls with attached hood and feet ( Attach a large paper clip to zipper to help zip & unzip )

8. Attached Hood Pull attached hood over head. Secure elastic around face, careful not to obstruct vision. Peel off adhesive backing, if present, and pat down over zipper from neck to groin.

9. Detached hood If vision is obstructed with the attached hood the trained observer will tuck the hood down behind the collar as shown. *A detached hood similar to the one one shown below would be donned

10. Boot Covers Put boot covers over attached feet of coverall *Sitting while applying boot covers to reduces the risk of a fall

11. PAPR use Evidence of OSHA’s respiratory medical evaluation and documentation of training on PAPR use is required prior to use in a patient care area.

12. Apply PAPR Donned over the coveralls to assure proper air flow PAPR hood covers face assuring no skin is exposed

13. Gown or Apron A single-use disposable fluid resistant gown or apron is recommended when caring for a patient with active bleeding, vomiting, or diarrhea

14. Outer Gloves Should be slightly larger than first pair. Pull up to cover wrist of coverall. Have trained observer blouse sleeves of coverall over the gloves.

15. Safety Verification No breaks or skin exposed Sufficient mobility to safely perform job extend arms bend at the waist twist-squat Verify completion of checklist Sanitizes gloved hands prior to entering patient care area.
