2 What is Epilepsy? Epilepsy is a neurological condition that, from time to time, produces brief disturbances electrical functions of the brain. (Epilepsy Foundation)) These disturbances are seizures. When seizures continue to occur for unknown reasons or because of an underlying problem that can not be corrected, the condition is known as epilepsy. (Epilepsy Foundation)

3 What causes epilepsy? Head Injuries Lack of Oxygen During Birth Brain Tumors Lead Poisoning Hereditary

4 Type of Seizures *Tonic Clonic Animal falls, looses consciousness, extends its limbs rigidly. Paddling of limbs, chewing, dilated pupils, salivation, urination, and defecation. (Alyward) * Partial Seizure Only occurs in one part of the body. Muscle jerking, movement of one limb, facial twitches. (Alyward) * Petit Mal Brief duration of unconsciousness, loss of muscle tone, blank stare, possibly upwards rotation in eyes. (Alyward) Very rare in animals. * Cluster Seizures Many seizures in a short amount of time. The animal is only conscious a short times between seizures.
