2 The present progressive tense Notes #8 Objective: Students will learn the present progressive tense, it’s uses, and its conjugation forms of regular and irregular verbs. Standard 1.2: Students understand and interpret written and spoken language on a variety of topics

3 The Present Progressive The Present Progressive is used to emphasize that something is happening RIGHT NOW. For example; John is playing tennis.

4 In English the present progressive is always composed of two parts – a helping verb and a present participle. Look at the examples below; SubjectHelping verbPresent Participle (also known as a gerund) IAmSwimming YouAreEating SheIsDancing WeAreLaughing TheyAreRunning

5 In Spanish, the present progressive is set up the exact same way – with a helping verb and a present participle. For example; Juan está cantando. Helping Verb Present Participle

6 The helping verb is always a form of the verb Estar (to be) which translates as “am”, “is”, or “are”. Below is a chart of Estar’s irregular conjugation. 7 The present participle is formed by adding “ando” or “iendo” to the end of the verb stem. Use “ando” for AR verbs and “iendo” for ER and IR verbs. For example; CANTAR To sing 1. Drop the AR as you always have to conjugate 2. Now add ando which means “-ing” AR TOSING ANDO Singing

8 ER and IR verbs work the same way as AR verbs do except that they use “iendo” instead of “ando”. For example; COMER To eat VIVIR To live 1. Drop the ER or IR ER 2. Now add iendo which means “-ing” To livee IENDO Living Eating

9 Forming the Present Progressive Start with subject, Use the verb estar + -ando or –iendo verb Estoyestamos Estásx Estáestán + hablando comiendo corriendo viviendo bailando escribiendo Subject + Yo El Ella Tu Nosotras Ellos Ellas

10 Here’s what it looks like when you combine the helping verb with the present participle. 11 Examples 1.He is asking. (Preguntar) 2.I am studying. (Estudiar) 3.We are running. (Correr) 4.You are writing. (Escribir) Él está preguntando. Yo estoy estudiando. Nosotros estamos corriendo. Tú estás escribiendo.

12 Irregulars- add -yendo Irregulars in this tense are few. You will learn most of them on a case by case basis. This unit contains some of the most common irregulars in the present progressive.
