3 The present tense is composed of two elements: the subject pronouns or subject + the form of the verb. Example: la maison estbelle sujetthe verb Adjectif Formation of the present tense of the verb Être

4 The subject of a verb is the person or thing which performs the action of that verb. Subject pronoun is a word that can replace the subject in a sentence French: Jean est. Il est. English: Jean is. 5 You use je to talk about yourself. e. g. Je suis français (e). You use tu to address a friend. e.g. Tu es américain (e). You use il to talk about a boy or a man. e.g. Il est blond. You use elle to talk about a girl /woman. e.g. Elle est blonde. Il and elle can be used for things e.g. Le collège? Il est grand. You use nous when referring to yourself and another person or other people. e.g. Nous sommes americans. You use vous when talking to two or more people. We use ils for masculine plural /group of males and females e.g.Ils sont des américans. We use Elles for two or more females. e.g. Elles sont américaines Subject Pronouns

7 Negation is formed by placing ne... pas around the conjugated verb, which, in this case, is the verb Être. Example: Jean est petit Jean n’est pas petit!. Jean is not small. Present tense of the verb Être in the negation (ne…pas)* Note ne becomes n’ before a vowel. Je ne suis pas = I am not Tu n’es pas = you are not Il n’est pas = he is not Elle n’est pas = she is not Nous ne sommes pas = we are not Vous n’êtes pas = you are not Ils ne sont pas = they are not (sing..plur.)
