What is FWBL ? CPD for individuals/teams of employees in a given company, The employees are following a work based learning programme designed for their specific work situation. The competence development is facilitated by teachers from AAU primarily based on AAU’s pædagogic model - PBL. The learning process is designed to match company’s competence-strategy and to meet the preferences of the employee. If possible it will be linked to an ongoing or planned project in the company. CPD-aalborg Bente Nørgaard

Facilitated Work Based Learning Integrated in engineering work No demand for leaving work place and family on a specific time Content defined by needs (not degree def.) Guaranty of professional relevance Content, size and speed individually adapted CPD-aalborg Bente Nørgaard

Definitions PBL on-campus studies. Learning objectives are academic def. in the curriculum. Project organised team-work. Earning Credits/Degree. WBL for individuals or teams of engineers learning by their work to meet academic defined objectives. Earning Credits/Degree FWBL for individuals or teams of engineers learning by their work and supervised by university professor to meet work defined needs CPD-aalborg Bente Nørgaard

Problem solving Universities The problem is a tool Learning is the goal Companies Professional skills are the tools The goal is to solve the problem CPD-aalborg Bente Nørgaard

The FWBL process can be described in 5 continuously phases: The contact phase Defining/specifing Learning Objectives phase Work out the Leaning Contract phase Implementation of FWBL phase Evaluation phase CPD-aalborg Bente Nørgaard

The contact phase Adapt wishes, expectations and demands Obtain knowledge of competence needs (strategy) Describe Project and Timeframe Identify the team of employees Inform about the FWBL method CPD-aalborg Bente Nørgaard

Definition of learning objectives Presentation of the project Specification of competence needs Presentation of teachers/facilitators Make the learning objectives specific Inform about the FWBL method CPD-aalborg Bente Nørgaard

WBL contract -Definition of learning goals -Specification of learning methods -Definition of milestones/task for the student -Definition of success criteria -Definition of company involvement -Definition of university involvement CPD-aalborg Bente Nørgaard

FAQ - Questions Is it expensiv? How many can participate? How will the new knowledge be integrated in the company? What kind of teacher will we get? Can we get acces to research based knowledge? How can we make sure we get the knowledge we need? CPD-aalborg Bente Nørgaard

………more questions CPD-aalborg Bente Nørgaard

23 Comments from Learners Our goal was to learn as much as possible! More would have been gained by being more focused on actual needs Culture in group/team (change) Learning Objectives changed through the WBL course Pointed remarks from colleagues not involved in WBL Time ressources CPD-aalborg Bente Nørgaard

24 Comments from Manager The strengt of FWBL - taylor made to the company/competence strategy the needs of the individual employee to the needs of a single project 20-50 % CPD is suitable for FWBL Knowledge integrated in the company Absent at traditional courses / Not absent at FWBL - dilemma University ’long-haired’ theory meet practical workday in company Closeer contact to university Arrange and organize meetings CPD-aalborg Bente Nørgaard
