OUTLINE TEAM SKILLS REVIEW OF HW CHUTE DESIGN CHUTE BUILD CHUTE TESTING PROJECT REVIEW--LEARNING ENVIRONMENT

Homework 1 1.) Help! J. (a high school senior) is trapped on a mountain with his dog Stella (mass is 20 kg) who has broken her leg. Stella needs to be parachuted for rescue and J. has contacted you. Explain how you would find the area for a suitable sized parachute so that Stella can be safely dropped over a 200 ft cliff and fall with a speed of 1 m/s. Spend 30 minute on this problem. You can write, use equation and draw pictures. Spelling, neatness, organization etc. are not important. Be prepared to summarize your solution in class. Your solution will be placed in you learning notebook in our next class period. 2.) Read the handout on drag, and then write a letter to one of your teachers and discuss your initial ideas on how you will go about designing a rocket that has low aerodynamic drag. Spend 30 minute on this problem. You can write, use equation and draw pictures. Spelling, neatness, organization etc. are not important. Be prepared to summarize your solution in class. Your solution will be placed in you learning notebook in our next class period.

The Professional Decision Making Process

Define the Situation H. needs a design for a parachute for base jumpers. He would like JEMS students to do the engineering. For this situation, What goals would you select? Prepare a list of potential goals for H.

Homework 2 due Wed 7/11/01 1.) Prepare a 10 minute presentation for a high school class. This presentation will summarize the information about model rockets that is summarized on pp. 1a-5 of the course notes. Spend 30 minute on this problem. You can write, use equation and draw pictures. Spelling, neatness, organization etc. are not important. Be prepared to summarize your solution in class. Your solution will be placed in you learning notebook in our next class period. 2.) Using a wind tunnel, you will be able to measure wind speed and drag force on a model rocket you construct. Explain how you will go about finding the coefficient of drag using the wind tunnel. Spend 30 minute on this problem. You can write, use equation and draw pictures. Spelling, neatness, organization etc. are not important. Be prepared to summarize your solution in class. Your solution will be placed in you learning notebook in our next class period.
