1 1 Sheffield Hallam University Graduate Diploma in Youth Work Placement Information

2 Graduate Diploma in Youth Work There are two routes: Part time (over two academic years) Full time (over one calendar year) Both lead to the JNC qualification Students have to undertake two work based placements

3 Graduate Diploma – Part Time Route Placement 1 (Professional Practice 1 – year one) minimum 240 hours – current post? September to May Placement 2 (Professional Practice 2 – year two) minimum120 hours - September to May

4 Grad Dip Placements – Full time route First placement (PP1) Starts Oct Minimum 240 hours Placement lasts until May Second Placement (PP2) In a different setting Starts June - August Minimum of 4 weeks 120 hours in total

5 All placements At least 50% of time engaged in face to face practice with 13 – 19 years Second placement needs to be different from first, preferably a different organisation Focus on Occupational standards...

6 NOS Standards – Placement 1 A1 Establish relationships and maintain dialogue with young people D1 Work as an effective and reflective practitioner D2 Work in ways which promote equality of opportunity, participation & responsibility D4 Work with young people to safeguard their welfare

7 NOS Standards – Placement 2 D3 Manage your work and create effective work relationships B3 Enable young people to work effectively in groups F2 Develop teams and individuals to enhance the quality of Youth Work F3 Promote a culture of health and safety

8 Placement Supervision All students have a work based placement supervisor They must be appropriately qualified/ experienced What does the supervisor do? Responsible for student induction/ support Gives 1 hour x weekly supervision Carries out 2 formal observations of student practice Signs timesheets and…

9 3 Way meetings Meets University tutor/ student minimum of 3 times: 1st meeting - Formative –Learning Agreement discussed (learning needs and opportunities agreed), induction, module outcomes, clarifying roles and responsibilities –Reflective Recordings – progress so far 2nd meeting – Mid Way Review - Formative (full-time students only) –Student’s Progress –Are learning needs being addressed? –Discussion based on reflective recordings – ‘critical incidents’ Final meeting - Summative –Have learning needs/module outcomes been met? –Focus on the student and the Summative Report –Use of reflective recordings

10 Graduate Diploma assessment for Placement Portfolio approach Placement Learning Agreement Placement Mid way review Positive Summative Report Confirmation of minimum hours in practice 2 x Supervisor's Observation Forms 12 or more reflective recordings Evidence of Supervision Examples of interventions linked to national outcomes Examples of organisational policy documents and analysis plus Personal/ Professional Development section
