3 The Reception Class……… Room 2 The “Reception Class” provides children with a safe, structured and stable introduction to primary school life. Designed to be a supportive transition between Kindy/Childcare and School. The children are in the reception class for an period of approximately 6 – 8 weeks before they are moved into a Year 1 class. Teacher aide who assists the teacher in meeting the children’s individual needs.

4 The Reception Class Programme……… Establish classroom and school routines Develop early writing, reading and maths skills. Introduce the children to new skills within other areas of the curriculum E.g.: Science, Social Studies, Technology, The Arts, Health and Physical Education. Develop visual and oral language skills. Ensure all children have a happy start to school life. Establish a supportive and effective relationship between home and school. Develop social skills that are appropriate for the school environment. Quickly identify children's individual learning needs/goals and ensure they receive the individual support they need. Support children to become independent and confident learners who are willing to “have a go”

5 Transition to School What you can do to help your child be ready for school? Help your child learn to pack their bag. Help your child learn to put things away when they are finished using them. Help your child learn to wash their hands by themselves. Encourage your child to share and take turns. Help your child learn to put their shoes on and take them off by themselves. Encourage Independence…….

6 Transition to School Talk with your child. Enjoy poems and nursery rhymes Encourage your child to have a go at new things. Help your child learn the letters names and sounds. Read stories to your child and talk about the story with them. Getting ready for Learning……. Help your child write their name in lower case letters.

7 Transition to School Count with your child…. forwards and backwards. Help your child recognise numbers to 10. Play card games and board games together. Help your child recognise shapes and colours. Getting ready for Learning……. Do puzzles together.

8 Pre-School Visits Pre-school visits give children…….. “a taste of school life” stories maths games and activities reading big books P.E activities cutting and pasting exploring class equipment craft activities a tour of the junior school area

9 New Entrant Parent Meeting The New Entrant parent meeting is a chance for you to tell us about your child so that we can get to know them and build a trusting relationship. The information you share with us at this meeting helps us understand your child’s personality, interests, needs and talents. It is also a chance to……… -discuss school routines -answer any questions you may have -talk you through your child’s first day -discuss any health issues your child may have -discuss after school pick up arrangements -get to know each other and begin to develop a positive relationship between home and school

10 The first day Arrive by 8:30am. Help your child unpack their bag and hang it on their hook. Talk with your child about where and when you will pick them up. Stay calm and be positive. Talk with your child about when you will leave. Bring your child into the classroom and find an activity to do together. Begin a before school morning routine so your child knows what to expect.

12 Healthy Snack At approximately 10:00am everyday we stop for a healthy snack to refuel our bodies and minds. Quick healthy snack ideas…… Cheese and crackers Cut up fruit Vege sticks Rice wafers/crackers Yoghurt Popcorn Dried fruit We are a WATER ONLY school

13 After two weeks at school… We formally assess your child's progress with their…. Alphabet knowledge Word recognition Pencil grip and drawing Knowledge of colours, shapes, patterns General progress at school and social skills After a month at school… We formally assess your child's progress with their…. Mathematical knowledge Oral Language (when required) This information is used to develop the next steps in your child’s learning and provide their next teacher with up to date information.

14 National Standards… What are National Standards? From 2010, all schools with children in Years 1-8 will be using National Standards in reading, writing and maths. The standards are a description of what all New Zealand children are expected to be able to do in reading, writing and maths in Years 1-8. They have been developed by the Ministry of Education and subject experts. The standards give teachers, your child and you a clear idea of where your child is at in reading, writing and maths, and what they have to do next in their learning.

15 National Standards… The reading, writing and maths standards are used by teachers to: plan and teach what your child needs to learn in reading, writing and maths across all curriculum subjects work out where your child is at work out your child’s next learning steps and set goals for learning, together with you and your child report clearly at least twice a year to you about your child’s progress and achievement in relation to the standards. 16 Enrolling your child Pick up an information pack from the office. Fill in the enrolment form and return it to the office. (with………..birth certificate, immunisation certificate, parent questionnaire, dental enrolment form) Start pre-school visits. (every Wednesday 1:30-2:30pm prior to starting school) Arrange an pre-school interview with the teacher. (15-30 minute meeting to discuss your child and prepare for their first day) Buy stationery from the school office. Pay school donation to the school office. $140 for one child reduced to $120 if paid in term 1 $160 for 2 children reduced to $140 if paid in term 1 and $180 for 3 or more children reduced to $160 if paid in term 1.

17 School Information The children can also order a few times a term. Simply complete a form and return it to the school office with the money required. Sushi can be ordered online on Fridays from http://www.sushi4u.co.nz/ and will be delivered tohttp://www.sushi4u.co.nz/ your child’s classroom at lunchtime. Fonterra supplies our school with long life milk for every child, every day. We serve it chilled and children can opt in or out of having milk daily. If you do not want your child to be given milk, please let us know.

18 School Information continued….. If your child is absent from school, you will need to ring the office and let them know. The school newsletter will be emailed directly to your chosen email each week. Paper copies of the newsletter will be available for you collect from the office if needed. We hold both Junior School Assembly’s and Whole School Assembly’s twice a term in the Auditorium. We invite you along to celebrate the children’s successes. The lost property can be found in the foyer of the old hall. Please name all of your child’s belongings.

19 School Information continued….. After/Before School Care – Kelly Club in the Hall. Enrol your child by completing an enrolment form in the hall. After School activities for Term 2 include: Street Dance, Ballet, Jazz, Guitar, Kelly Sports. Contact Keri in the office to book.
