IPBES: starting in 2011! UN General Assembly 22 December 2010 The UN General Assembly, Noting UNEP decision SS.XI/4, the Busan Outcome, the CBD COP 10 decision X- (L.25), and the decision adopted by the PX Commission of UNESCO in document 185 EX/43, requests UNEP, without prejudice to the final institutional arrangements of IPBES, and in consultation with all relevant organisations and bodies, in order to fully operationalize the Platform, to convene a plenary meeting providing for the full and effective participation of all Member States, in particular representatives from developing countries, to determine modalities and institutional arrangements for the Platform at the earliest opportunity. First Plenary of IPBES: October 2011

Scientific community very supportive of IPBES Feb 2010: CBD-PreCOP10 (Nagoya); Science-policy dialog on IPBES with Japanese Vice-Minister of Environment; 300 participants; April 2010: US consultation on IPBES (USNC DIVERSITAS); October 2010: Side event on IPBES at CBD-COP10, Nagoya (DIVERSITAS- IHDP-ICSU); March 2011: Perrings, Duraiappah, Larigauderie and Mooney: The Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services Science-Policy Interface, Science 4: 1139-1140 IPBES side event at CBD COP10 (DIVERSITAS, IHDP, ICSU, IUCN, UNEP)

Vision of GEO BON A coordinated global network that: gathers and shares information on biodiversity, provides tools for data integration and analysis, and contributes to improving environmental management and human well-being. Biodiversity Observation Network

A brief history 2006 Oct: First International Workshop (Geneva, CH) DIVERSITAS, USA (NASA), and EU (E-BON) mandated as co-leads of GEO BON Jan 2008: GEO BON Steering Committee formed (Geneva) Apr 2008: 2 nd International workshop (Potsdam, Germany) Produce GEO BON concept document Feb 2010: 3rd International workshop (Asilomar, California) 22 May 2010: Launch of GEO BON implementation plan (v 1.0) Oct 2010: Request from CBD-COP10 (adequacy report) March 2011: Adequacy report meeting (Wageningen, NL) Biodiversity Observation Network

GEO BON & CBD Decision CBD-COP10 (Nagoya, Nov 2010) Recognizes the need to continue strengthening our ability to monitor biodiversity at all levels including … through participation in, and support to the GEO BON… Requests the Executive Secretary to invite GEO BON, (…) to prepare an evaluation of existing observation capabilities relevant to the targets contained in the Strategic Plan for the period 2010-2020. For more information on GEO BON: http://www. earthobservations.org/

GEO BON structure Steering committee meets annually – 18 people: stakeholders, implementers, experts Small secretariat in S-Africa (CSIR), and GEO Sec in Geneva Co-leaders GEO: DIVERSITAS, NASA, EC-EBONE Focussed, limited-term topic working groups – Genetics (Tet Yahara and Daniel Faith) – Terrestrial Species Monitoring Programmes (Henrique Pereira) – Terrestrial Ecosystem Monitoring (Rob Jongman) – Freshwater Ecosystem Monitoring (Ian Harrison) – Marine Ecosystem Monitoring (Jan de Leeuw and Carlo Heip) – Ecosystem Services (Hal Mooney) – In-situ / Remote-sensing Integration (Simon Ferrier) – Informatics and Portals (Hannu Saarenmaa and Eamonn O Tuama) Regional or thematic participating BONs – Asia-Pacific Regional BON (AP-BON) – J-BON (Japan) – EBONE (Europe)
