MAE3 INTRODUCTION TO ENGINEERING GRAPHICS AND DESIGN Instructor: Dr. Nathan Delson

If you are on the wait-list You will be given priority enrollment in fall. Watch you email carefully near enrollment time. This is priority but not guaranteed enrollment. You can attend MAE3 for the first 2 weeks to see if spots open up.

This is an Exciting and Challenging time to be an Engineer Exciting If you get a product idea in the morning Order your parts on the internet for next day CAD your design and send to rapid prototyping Challenging Technology is changing rapidly, so one is engaged in life-long learning There is world-wide competition

In MAE3 You Will: Design and build working machines Use Computer-Aided-Design and Drafting Use creativity side-by-side with engineering equations Apply teamwork and project management to to meet an engineering challenge Communicate technical achievements orally and in writing

Design is My Passion Because: You build real hardware that can solve real problems You integrate analysis with hands-on You use your creativity and problem solving skills You use the latest technology It is always changing and always challenging Some examples (create your own portfolio!)Some examples

Model Clock Project: Weeks 1-2.5 AutoCAD for 2D Drawing Rapid Prototyping using the Lasercamm Machine design basics Timing analysis and verification Debby Grunewald’s clock

Robot Project: Weeks 2.5-10 Team competition New contest each quarter Autodesk Inventor for 3D CAD models Creativity, analysis, teamwork, communication, project management Report Lane Carlson, John Healey, Debby Grunewald, Eric Noller

Engineering Graphics Integrated Throughout the Course Use the right tool for the right reasons Hand sketching 2D CAD 3D CAD

Why Teach Design this Way? Engineer tools will change by the time you graduate Aerospace/Bio-engineering/Mechanical will need to Tackle open-ended problems Work in teams and communicate effectively Use engineering tools and theory creatively Develop life long learning skills

The Design Process is as Important as Engineering Analysis Understanding the Problem Creativity Teamwork Risk Management Managing a Project Proactively managing design iterations Apply engineering theory effectively

What You Will Get Out of MAE3 Learn AutoCAD and Inventor basics Present your ideas Learn how to build a machines Shop fundamentals Machine Design Design Process and Management Skills ALL PROPORTIONAL TO WHAT YOU PUT IN

A Culture of Excellence High quality work is not done overnight, in the first attempt, or without assistance. In MAE3 we will use: Multiple iterations until we get it right Peer critique to get better ideas Learning from examples

MAE3 TA and Tutors are There to Help Each section will be lead by undergraduate engineering tutor. There to help each student and team achieve their design goals Will ask if ok to use on-line photo to help learn names Office hours spread out over week Major grading done by instructor

How To Do Well in MAE3 Time management Last minute design multiplies effort by 4 Section attendance is mandatory Attend lecture: there will be pop quizzes Check web page frequently http://www.mae.ucsd.edu/mae3/ Teamwork Don’t worry; No CAD or shop background required Problems? Contact Tutors and Instructors early! Have fun

Logistics $40 kit fee, and shop liability waiver Labs start this week!!! (AutoCAD Basics) Required Texts: Soft reserves: Course pack Recommended Text, Software, Hardware: USB memory sick AutoCad and Inventor Free Download!(see webpage) Homework 20% docked for assignments 5 minutes late No grade for over a week late Prerequisites: material from physics 2A will be used High school AP or concurrent enrollment is OK

Large MAE3 and other classes share the Design Studio! Almost 200 MAE3 Students! With your help we will succeed Design studio environment is what you create Shop etiquette, respect, and common sense

First Assignments (see website) For first lab meeting – this week! Hand sketch of pendulum and IDEO Video questionnaire due week 1 in section Review clock project Review Lasercamm manual (quiz next Thursday!)

If You are on Wait List All sections are strictly limited to 24 students. Attend the section you are wait listed on, and make sure to sign the role sheet. The tutor can let you know how close you are to getting in. You will know by the end of week 2 if you can add the class. You cannot switch sections without going to the end of the waitlist.
