The international pipeline contractor for landmark project JCV/vs rev 0 1 IPLOCA 2008 Environment Award

JCV/vs rev 0 2 Effective Waste Management and Waste Reduction in Yemen YEMEN LNG GAS PIPELINE PROJECT AND PROJECT REQUIREMENTS EPC Onshore pipeline 320km x 38’’ and 25km x 30’’ Installation of non-hazardous waste incinerator Maximisation of re-use and recycling activities Use of in-country facilities for treatment, recycling and disposal of Project Waste SPIECAPAG OBJECTIVES The main objective was how to develop a waste management system in compliance with Yemeni Environmental Legislation and International Standards. Identifies solutions we came to during the project, in order to adapt to the specific conditions and constraints encountered in Yemen.

JCV/vs rev 0 3 Effective Waste Management and Waste Reduction in Yemen FACILITIES IN YEMEN No waste treatment / recycling / disposal facilities available in Yemen meeting international standards Article 53 of the Environment Protection Law n° 26 of 1995, strictly prohibits even the construction of hazardous waste treatment facilities in the country. The majority of the Oil and Gas companies based in Yemen have ended up either exporting their hazardous waste out of Yemen, or storing the waste in more or less acceptable conditions, until a solution is found at a national regulatory level.

JCV/vs rev 0 4 Effective Waste Management and Waste Reduction in Yemen SURVEY OF EXISTING WASTE FACILITIES IN YEMEN With collaboration of the National Authorities (Environment Protection Authority) 27 landfill sites 11 “recycling/exportation facilities” But none to meet international standards and practices EXISTING LICENCED RECYCLING SITES

JCV/vs rev 0 5 Effective Waste Management and Waste Reduction in Yemen SOLUTION DEVELOPED BY SPIECAPAG Limited use of existing facilities for only specific categories of recyclable non hazardous waste under strict monitoring of Spiecapag. Develop our own treatment facilities. Evaluation of the type, nature, categories and quantities of waste expected to be produced (by statistics from previous Spiecapag projects) Environment Risk Assessments and compatibility studies were performed Procure only those products/chemicals which were rated with minimum environmental risk List by order of priority for each type waste recycling/disposal/treatment option

JCV/vs rev 0 6 Effective Waste Management and Waste Reduction in Yemen PLANNING AND DEVELOPMENT OF A WASTE MANAGEMENT STRATEGY Awareness training, toolbox talks, waste labelling, notice information boards environmental education handbook. Waste Management flowchart Camp waste segregation and storage area, Central waste segregation and storage area for all wastes collected on construction ROW Hazardous products and waste products were provided with secondary containment to avoid spillages Development and implementation of daily, weekly and monthly waste tracking system Utilisation of used oil as fuel for minimizing the overall energy consumption Environment Site visit, Waste Audits by Lenders, YLNG, Local Authorities, Third Party

JCV/vs rev 0 7 Effective Waste Management and Waste Reduction in Yemen CONCLUSIONS Spiecapag introduced innovative methods to treat its own non hazardous and hazardous waste due to the fact that there were no existing facilities available in Yemen meeting international standards. Through training and continual education, the local workforce and communities became aware of the impacts that waste can cause on the environment. 742 tons of non hazardous waste were incinerated 758 tons of non hazardous waste licensed landfill 829 tons of non hazardous waste recycled by 3rd Party 145 tons of non hazardous waste recycled by local communities 274 tons of hazardous waste treated
