This package is one of a series of STFC SHE Code – updates, revisions and launches. Simple presentations will be available for all Codes and should be used by STFC Managers at all levels to cascade the key messages to all staff and contractors.

4. STFC SHE Group Corporate Services Why a Work at Height SHE Code? This code addresses issues raised by the Work at Height Regulations 2005. Falls from height are the biggest cause of workplace death in the UK and one of the main causes of major injuries. –In 2005/06 falls from height accounted for 46 fatal accidents at work and nearly 4000 major injuries. A third of STFC 'fall from height' injuries over the past 6 years have had to be reported to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).

STFC SHE Group Corporate Services Key features Work at height is NO longer confined to situations where people may fall over 2m - the new regulations recognise that significant injuries may, and have resulted from falls of less than 2m This code establishes –clear guidance for work at height and the use of ladders –ensures that avoidance is considered as a first option –ensures that work at height is part of the standard Risk Assessment process for any job or task –introduces a Permit System for Work on Roofs

6. STFC SHE Group Corporate Services Key points Read that part of the Code relevant to you. Always consider alternatives to work at height. If it cannot be avoided then carry out a Risk Assessment. Consider people who may pass close to the work area not just the people carrying out the work. Ensure that suitable Personal Protective Equipment is provided – harnesses, hard hats … Check that your contractors are complying with this code through there Method Statements (e.g. competence certification). Report all incidents or near misses in SHE Enterprise THIS CODE DOES NOT STOP YOU USING A LADDER WHERE IT IS THE MOST SUITABLE METHOD FOR CARRYING OUT THE WORK

Training appendices should be used by managers and staff when considering new hazards or in general as part of Annual Performance Reviews (APRs). - see SHE Code 10 ‘Provision of SHE training’ As each code is launched relevant training will be set up for staff.
