MODEL…Watch how I think about the effect words have on the readers, remembering that the words we use carry feelings. A word can have 2 kinds of meanings. My older cousin Cal is clever. He asks questions because he is curious. My older cousin Cal is sly. He asks questions because he is nosy. Denotation: the dictionary meaning Connotation: the feeling that people associate with the word Positive Negative

5 Active Work…Let’s work together to think about the meaning of the red, bold words/phrases.
In the fourth chapter of Dragonwings Moon Shadow’s father saves Black Dog. Black Dog was about to be killed in an alley way. Then Moon Shadow’s father makes a very loud high pitch sound. The men that are about to kill Black Dog were so excited that they mistook it for a siren. They scrambled away thinking the police were on to them and Moon Shadow and his father got the chance to take Black Dog home.
