5 What is BIM

6 BETTER INFORMATION MANAGEMENT
What is BIM BETTER INFORMATION MANAGEMENT BIM (Building Information Modelling) It’s not just 3D CAD It’s not just a new technology application It’s not next generation, it here and now! BIM is essentially value creating collaboration through the entire life-cycle of an asset, underpinned by the creation, collation and exchange of shared 3D models and intelligent, structured data attached to them. There are many different definitions, and instead of giving my own This quote is taken from the task group website

7 What is BIM? Word cloud: The words appear larger the more often they are used. This word cloud uses the complete text found within BS1192-2:2013 Information is key. Where is 3D ? IT’S NOT ABOUT THE MODEL

8 The Origins of BIM

9 The Origins of BIM Latham Report Egan Report Accelerating Change
1994 Egan Report 1998 Accelerating Change 2002 Never Waste A Good Crisis 2009 Latham Report: Industry should move away from adversarial construction, integrated approach should be adopted Egan Report: Construction in underperforming Recommends 10% reduction in cost & time, 20% reduction in defects via integrated projects Accelerating Change: 20% of construction (by value) to be integrated. 50% by 2007 Never Waste a Good Crisis: Demonstrations have shown that cost, time, defects can be achieved through integration. The industry has not performed. Lack of cohesive industry vision, no incentives for change, too many industry bodies, industry driven by economic forces

10 The Origins of BIM Quiz Time Based on the last eleven years of KPI’s: ~50% What percentage of projects come in on time and no budget? Wolstenholme, 2009 Taken from Never Waste a Good Crisis

11 The Origins of BIM Cost Carbon BIM was seen as a way to Improve:
From these reports BIM was to be focused with two keys drivers in mind. Cost and Carbon

12 The Origins of BIM “Production Information is generally, incorrect, incomplete, uncoordinated and ambiguous” Avanti published ‘Production Information’ using the tagline that ‘Production Information is generally, incorrect, incomplete, uncoordinated and ambiguous’. This was later used as the basis for the BS1192 series

13 “Information is Uncoordinated…”
This image shows an architects drawing in Blue with the engineer drawings overlaid in Red. D046 doesn’t’ appear on the engineers drawings, walls clash, the stairs clash

14 “Information is ambiguous… or why we need Standards”
This scenario is directly addressed within BS8541-2: Filled circles are described as ‘from within outline’, but if a filled arrow head had been used it would have meant ‘from outline’, pointing at the smaller circle. By following the standard this would be avoided!

15 “Information may be incomplete…”
This drawing was incomplete, it lacked topographical and tree survey information, which resulted in…

16 “Information is uncoordinated…”
In 1999 NASA famous lost a £125m probe due to consultants using a mix of metric and imperial units. Information needs to be co-ordinated correctly

17 “Information is also geospatially incorrect…”
In 2003 a Swiss / German joint project. The Laufenburg bridge came together with a difference of 540mm as different sea levels datums were used. Agreed standards would have resolved this. Cinema in Cambridge was constructed 750mm out of place, planning issue and the cinema had to be demolished and rebuilt

18 The Origins of BIM Construction Strategy
2011 There is a detailed programme of measures Government will take that will reduce costs by up to 20% by the end of this parliament. Government will require fully collaborative 3D BIM (with all project and asset information, documentation and data being electronic) as a minimum by A staged plan will be published with mandated milestones showing measurable progress at the end of each year. Essentially the Government has decided it does not want to spend money on waste and defects, and one of the ways to hit its 20% target is through BIM. By collaborating, the cost of defects and design can be decreased. The industry needs to adopt if it wants any government money.

19 The Origins of BIM BIS BIM Strategy
2011 The Government as a client can derive significant improvements in cost, value and carbon performance through the use of open sharable asset information. This idea is reiterated in the BIM strategy document

20 BIM Level 2 Requirements

21 BIM Maturity Levels – Strategy Paper 2011
0 - Unmanaged CAD probably 2D, with paper (or electronic paper) as the most likely data exchange mechanism. 1 - Managed CAD in 2 or 3D format using BS 1192:2007 with a collaboration tool providing a common data environment, possibly some standard data structures and formats. Commercial data managed by standalone finance and cost management packages with no integration. 2 - Managed 3D environment held in separate discipline “BIM” tools with attached data. Commercial data managed by an Enterprise Resource Planning System (ERP). Integration on the basis of proprietary interfaces or bespoke middleware could be regarded as “pBIM” (proprietary). The approach may utilise 4D Programme data and 5D cost elements. 3 - Fully open process and data integration enabled by IFC / IFD. Managed by a collaborative model server. Could be regarded as iBIM or integrated BIM potentially employing concurrent engineering processes. 0 – Standard CAD office 1 – Uses common data environments and standard data structures 2 – Uses a federated model (model made up of multi discipline models), and library management 3 – IFC / IFD driven BIM via cloud based servers. No clear indication on how this’ll look at present

22 UK Standards for BIM BS1192:2007 PAS1192-2:2013 PAS1192-3:2014
(COBie) BS 8541 Series To help you achieve BIM level 2. There are a number of British Standards available BS1192:2007 Common data environments and file naming (required to achieve level 1) PAS information management during CAPex using BIM PAS information management during Opex using BIM PAS COBie BS8541 series looking at object naming, level of detail and standard symbology

23 BIM Industry Documentation
PI For BIM (CIC) BIM Protocol (CIC) Uniclass (CPIC) Digital Plan of Work (BIM Task Group) CPIx Online (CPIC) ? ? Uniclass and dPOW are currently outstanding. RIBA enterprises has one a TSB bid to develop them during the next 6months

24 BIM in Wales

25 Task Group Working Paper
BIM in Wales CEWales BIM Task Group Working Paper 2012 Recommendations: Alignment with UK Government with all Welsh Government funded projects at level 2 by 2016 and all Welsh Government Department Projects to lead at level 2 by 2015. A value or threshold for Wales could not be established in the timescales allowed. Collaborative working arrangements and internal business development should still be encouraged until such a value is set. Pilot projects are expected to inform the thresholds based on value and complexity by 2014/15. The following improvement areas are proposed: i. Added Value ii. Cost Predictability iii. Carbon Intelligence Only Welsh Govt. response being the construction procurement strategy (next slide)

26 BIM in Wales Welsh Construction Procurement Strategy 2013
Key Objectives and Milestones: Alignment with the UK Government Building Information Modelling (BIM) strategy, with all Welsh Government funded projects at level 2 by 2016 and all Welsh Government Department projects to lead at level 2 by 2015. No official response from Welsh Government as of yet

27 The CLAW All Wales BIM Toolkit
BIM in Wales Contains: Introduction Setting the BIM Scene Business Case IT Investment Employer Information Requirements Template Employer Information Requirements Example Glossary of Terms Procurement Guide BIM and GSL Guide Collaborative Maturity Assessment Tool Standards and Protocol Reference The CLAW All Wales BIM Toolkit 2014 (Draft) Aimed at clients to allow for a consistent BIM approach in Wales as it will be utilised my all 22 local authorities when tendering for BIM related schemes.
