2 Overview Born in New York City on July 26, 1928, died on March 7, 1999 American film director, screenwriter, producer, cinematographer and editor Part of the New Hollywood filmmaking wave He taught himself all aspects of filmmaking

3 His Start At 13 his father bought him his first camera, triggering a fascination with still photography He decided to focus on photography, rather than school At 16 he shot a photograph of a news vendor the day after F.D.R. died and submitted it to Look magazine Look hired him on the spot as a freelance photographer
