4 DINORAH’S DAY Every day I get up at 4:30 in the morning. I cook eggs, beans and tortillas. I take a shower and brush my teeth. I take breakfast at six o’clock. I drive to go to work at 6:30. I leave work at 1:30. I take lunch at eleven o’clock. I get home. I cook dinner. I eat dinner at five o’clock. I clean the kitchen at 5:30. At 6:30 I go to school. At 9:45 I leave the school. I return to my home at ten o’clock. I arrive at my home at 10:20. Finally, I go to sleep. DINORAH HERNANDEZ 4

7 7 What We Are High school classes at five locations in Fairfax County for older ESOL beginners Morning, afternoon and evening classes –Standards-based high school credit courses –ESOL and Content (Science/Social Studies) courses (elective) –Mathematics (Algebra I/II are SOL-tested)

8 8 Where We Started Nancy Sprague and the 7-11 Feasibility study—community input Early days of the school—Fall, 1991 –One location –Part-time administrator/counselor –2 ESOL teachers –Math teacher

9 Our Students Age 18 or older Fairfax County residents No high school diploma ESOL proficiency: –WIDA ELP Levels 1 and 2 –Beginning English learners Continuous, interrupted or no prior schooling Placed in grades 9-11 Rolling enrollment

12 What We Offer Evening Classes Time: 6:30-9:45 –Subjects offered ESOL Mathematics Concepts Science World Concepts Morning and Afternoon Classes (Pimmit Only)
