1 BELL WORK – Monday (week 4) What is a clause ? Define the word clause. Then provide an example of an independent AND dependent clause. You may need to look those terms up as well to refresh your memory.

2 BELL WORK - Tuesday  Identify each BOLD section of the sentence as independent or dependent. 1. Joyce enjoyed geometry more than she enjoyed algebra. 2.She liked the fact that the class began with simple shapes. 3. A point was the first thing that the students learned about. 4. A point has no length or width. 5.A triangle, which everyone recognizes, is a shape made up of three lines. 6.When you study geometry, you must use terms accurately.

3 BELL WORK- Wednesday  Identifying Independent and Dependent clauses  If an item is a sentence consisting of only ONE independent clause write INDEPENDENT. If it is a fragment consisting of only ONE dependent clause write DEPENDENT. If the sentence contains both an independent AND a dependent write an equation for the order of the clause. Either INDEPENDENT + DEPENDENT= COMPLETE SENTENCE or DEPENDENT + INDEPENDENT= COMPELTE SENTENCE 1. We had to leave the party because the room was too crowded. 2. Although the competition was rough. 3. Daisy drove the yellow car out to her cousin’s home in the country. 4. Since Beverly’s voice is strong, she won the lead in the musical. 5. Jeffery likes music that was written over 300 years ago. 6. Because the rain was so heavy. 7. After the bees chased us inside, we watched TV.

4 BELL WORK -THURSDAY  Simple VS compound sentences Identify each sentence below as either simple or compound. REMINDER: a compound sentence has two or more independent clauses joined together but NO dependent clauses. They may be joined by a comma, semi-colon or coordinating conjunction (FANBOYS) 1.It was pouring rain; getting a cab was impossible. 2.Miguel patched and cleaned the sails of the boat. 3. The magazine was both timely and readable. 4.Ted read the instructions, and then he built the model. 5.At first, television stations were on the air only a few hours a day, but now many broadcast 24 hours a day. 6.Computers and printers are standard equipment in most classrooms. 7.Leo took the flag down, and Rosaria folded it. 8.The train came in early, but I was already at the station. 9.The wind started blowing in the morning and kept on until late in the day. 10.The storm forced waste water into the lake, so swimming is prohibited today.
